in the encouter with Itachi he find for his first time the MS Sharinganhe dident know about the ms except after know it from itachi or maybe he did
i said i guess ^^
and then by is emotional trauma for being ''killed'' by itachi in his genjustu he learned how to do the MS..xd
when Kakashi died on the pain arc he said that he wasnt able to protect her meining she's dead.U don't know if Rin is dead.. Kishi never said so u have to assume she's probably alive

Its amazing how he can activate something that would normally require you to be apart of the clan. But yet he can deactivate it.
Not exactly sure how he activated it. One could say he just trained really hard.
