カカシ外伝2:四季 [Kakashi gaiden 2: Shiki] - 第1: 終了の日夏 [Dai 1: Shūryō no Hinatsu]
Kakashi Sidestory II: Four Seasons - Chapter One: Days of Ending Summer
-----
A gentle breeze rolls in through the opening of a window, it sways the curtains back and forth while birds chirp harmoniously outside on yet another sunny spring day. Kakashi, laying on his single bed and resting his head on the pillow. The sunshine gleam into the room, the curtain dims the light sequently as the fresh air delicately blows in.
Kakashi nonchalantly leans up to face the wall at the foot of his bed. A calendar is hung up on the wall on the current month with a scenic picture of a blossoming park paired up with the schedules, though one of the days is marked with a broad red circle, clearly something is happening on that day – that day is today.
Something obviously on his mind, Kakashi says no word but with an unconcerning look upon his face. He unenergetically drags his body to sit on the edge of the bed; sighing and placing his hand on the knob of the wooden drawer next to his bed and sliding it open plaintively. He reaches inside and takes out a picture frame with the back facing toward him, placing it on his lap soon after on the same side, unhurriedly, he turns it over to look at the picture, revealing a photo of Team Minato. Left to right, Kakashi, Rin, Obito and unmistakably, Minato in the middle, the picture itself has a striking resemblance to the one of Team Seven. Once more, Kakashi sighs subtly to himself and closes his eye in languish.
Opening his eye again, he wakes up in a spotlessly clean hospital room and on the side of the bed. He gets up from sitting down and over to the window he was facing, he looks through the transparent glass and in his reflection, he had his Konoha headband on, a bandage covering his left eye and was not dressed like an ordinary patient, instead he was wearing casual clothes – A black shirt matched with dark blue trousers. Though none of this catching his attention, his eyes remained fixed on the outside world and on the arid day that was just laying outside. His mind seemingly gone to another place, A young girl with tidy hair and strange purple markings on her cheeks and most notably wearing the uniform of a Konoha nurse walks in with a bubbly mood, she noticed Kakashi just gazing outside of the window.
“Kakashi-kun?” She said, wondering if he was okay although there was not a reply, she repeated “Kakashi-kun?!” but yet, still no reply. The girl scurried up to him, not knowing his condition and poked him on the back of his head, trying to get his attention, to which it did and Kakashi snapped back into reality, looking behind him
“Oh, Rin… It’s you” He said with a somewhat uncaring tone. Rin looked a little worried to why he is acting so wierdly but she remained cheerful and looked over to his untidy bed and the desk right next to it, noticing a plate of uneaten grapes with an open card next to them
“You… Didn’t eat the grapes I gave you?” Rin asked Kakashi “I was just about to leave, so I’ll get something good to eat once I get out” Kakashi then replied soon after. Rin’s reaction to this was reflected in her face, a slight frown.
Kakashi then turns around and begins to head towards the door to leave the room undisturbed until Rin questioned Kakashi on his health.
“Are you sure you’re ready to leave?” Kakashi soon replied “It doesn’t matter, I can’t be wasting time resting when I have more important things to do” He then reaches for the door and slides it open to leave the room, Rin on the other hand looks once more over to his bed, slightly upset but takes it on the chin. As Kakashi who has now left, leaves Rin to wonder about him as she walks over to the uneaten grapes and looks at the card that came along with it
‘Dear Kakashi,
Although a bit cliché, I’ve bought you some grapes.
I wish you all the best and know that you’re being thought about every minute of the day.
Rin ~’
She smiled upon reading this, knowing that Kakashi had also read it. The sun then beams from the window, hitting Rin on her face, she squints her eyes in reaction to it being too luminous and heads over to the window to close the curtains though her attention is caught by Kakashi leaving the hospital and heading out onto the empty road casually, with his hands in his pocket. Rin’s innocent smile then becomes a light giggle as she observes him from afar.
Walking sluggishly down the an empty alleyway, the stench of trash lingers in the air and only made worse by the summertime heat though being such a humid day, the alleyway itself is somewhat dim thanks to the shadow of the buildings that it is in between. Still having his hands in his pocket, he reaches the midway point of the alleyway, only to be abruptly stopped by the shout of someone behind him.
“Hey, Kakashi! Is that you?”
Kakashi turns around curiously to see who this person was, only to notice it is not a single person but three people. Though not able to clearly make out whom it is due to the light being so dim, he establishes that he is male and of similar build of himself, though soon enough the person would reveal himself by walking closer and in plain view, along with the other two, into Kakashi’s sight.
“You probably don’t recognise me but word has got around that you have the Sharingan…”
The person wears a Konoha headband around his head, so it is obvious he is a ninja within the village though he fashions the dress code similar to that of the Uchiha clan whereas the other two do not, and just wear casual clothing not striking any resemblance to an associated clan. Kakashi doesn’t reply to this person but only glances over them all and finally back at the person whom is talking. The male opposing Kakashi begins to become frustrated at Kakashi’s silence and increasingly irritated.
“I am Inabi of the Uchiha Clan! And if these rumours of you bearing our clans most treasured asset are true, then you must be dealt with. Damn fake Uchiha!”
Upon his final words, his two tomoe Sharingan activates and he hastily charges at Kakashi with his fists held high. Punch after punch, Inabi swiftly attempts to land blows into Kakashi’s face but to no success as they are easily evaded by weaving out of the way. Inabi smiles manically as the tempo of his attacks speed up, catching Kakashi off guard, to which eventually a punch lands. Hitting Kakashi on the cheek, forcing him away.
“Is this all the wondrous Kakashi Hatake, son of the forsaken White Fang has to offer?” He chuckles and grabs a kunai out of his pouch, once more charging impetuously at Kakashi. Noticing where this Inabi person keeps his tools, he uses the momentum the opponent is rushing at him to his advantage and at the last moment, ducks out of the way of the relentless attack, then elbowing Inabi in the kidney as he abruptly stops from his dash, throwing him off balance but surpassingly, the Uchiha swerves around, coming back once more to deliver a slash toward Kakashi.
Clank. Two kunai parry one another, Kakashi was able to snag one from Inabi’s pouch as he was thrown off balance. The two ninja intensely lock eyes, trying to outmuscle each other.
“You’re not as bad as you look, though you will succumb to the overwhelming power of the Uchiha clan” He said though his voice was teetering as ironically, he was being overpowered by Kakashi though noticing this, Inabi uses his wavering strength to knock both kunai from their hands and into the wall at side of the alleyway then quickly sweep kicking Kakashi on his side, knocking him to the side of the passage and onto the wall where he catches his breath, still not fully healed from his injury prior to his hospitalisation. Knowing he doesn’t have a lot left in him, he knows he should finish this off quickly and charges lightning chakra into his right hand, the light begins to gather, illuminating the alleyway with tremendous blue light
“…Chidori” He says calmly as he gazes at Inabi with an angered look.
Charging gracefully after the Chidori has formed, the sound of chirping birds rings down the alleyway. Kakashi quickly glides fluently toward his opponent who looks on with a smug look upon his arrogant face.
“Take this!” Kakashi shouts just as the Chidori pierces Inabi’s chest but surprisingly, a split second before impact, it fails as he is abruptly stopped without his knowledge. He looks at Inabi with a shocked expression that soon became worry, as he is unable to move at all.
“Good work” Inabi yells out to one of his friends who is kneeling on the ground with his hands firmly locked with the hand seal of the rat.
“Shadow Imitation Technique? You’re with the Nara clan?” Kakashi asks, as he is unable to move and is open to any assault though Inabi uses this opportunity to answer his question “Ah, someone has been doing his homework” he then snickers “Though it wasn’t worthwhile because you’re about to die!”
Horse. Tiger. Snake. Ram. Monkey. Boar. Horse. Tiger. Inabi performs a sequence of seals and inhales a large amount of air, bending back as Kakashi stands helpless.
“Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu!”
Kakashi’s eye widened as the technique is yelled across the passage. Inabi exhales a large amount of fire, although not of the same caliber as an experienced Uchiha, engulfs Kakashi in a ferocious fireball that carries away his body and collides with the wall, leaving a dark scorched mark upon the bricks. Inabi smiles with delight.
“Chidori!!”
Suddenly, Kakashi’s voice is heard from the side, screaming out his technique again “Chidori!” The sound of the chirping birds; a split second later, are heard coming out of Inari’s ribcage. Kakashi has landed his technique. The Uchiha is left bewildered and looks back at the area where he used his fire technique, noticing a kunai in the place of where Kakashi would have laid if his attack was a success. Inabi’s blood then spurts out of his mouth as the Chidori is pulled out of him although not over yet. With the last ounce of his strength, Inabi unleashes a furious punch, catching Kakashi by surprise, knocking him over to the trashcans of the alleyway and falling on the ground out of exhaustion and fatigue. Bandages fall from Kakashi’s face. His two tomoe Sharingan is revealed!
“Ah, finally… There it is!” Inabi says while blood seeps from his body though not worried about this, he carries on talking “Guys, I need you to take the eye for me”
At that moment, the two friends who accompanied Inari swoop in. the Nara boy jumps into the air, bending his knee and aiming it towards Kakashi’s face. Though now, his vision has increased to an incredible level and is able to perceive the foes movements. Effortlessly, the knee is avoided by simply rolling away but having not only the Nara boy to worry about, the other friend comes from the side and thrusts his fist into Kakashi’s face. “Hmm?” The boy is dumbfounded as the attack didn’t land and then only to notice that Kakashi ducked at the last moment but having no time to counter, the boy is hit with an ascending uppercut straight to his jaw, sending him staggering backwards but with no time for respite, Kakashi is once more attacked by the Nara clan member, though easily disposed of with another string of weaving movements. The two lackeys turned out to be pushovers but panting uncontrollably, Kakashi realizes the Sharingan drains too much chakra, and after the use of two Chidoris on top of not being fully recovered, he is almost unable to fight. The friends of Inabi begin to get up while Inabi himself limps toward Kakashi, holding his open wound, heavily gasping for air.
“Just give it up… You have no chance of escaping. Hand over the Sharingan or pay with your life. You worthless imitation Uchiha!”
At the trembling shout of Inabi, the three of them pounce once more on Kakashi who is out of breath and has loss the will to fight…
“Get your grubby hands off him!”
A voice is surprisingly heard though nobody was around. The four of them looked all around, confused as to whom this person was. It turns out it wasn’t a person at all! A small dog stood in the way of the three opposing ninja, guarding Kakashi as he sat on the ground of the alleyway.
The three of them laughed hysterically while Kakashi looked surprised but not entirely impressed by the appearance of this small, brown dog with a blue vest wrapped around him, Konoha headband on his head and a bandage on his right leg.
“How funny! A puny dog comes to save the day? How pathetic!”
The dog snarls and then barks, though not at the three ninja but behind him and at the other end of the alleyway. The barks are soon replied by even louder barks, grabbing the attention of everyone, alerting them to the end of the passage. A pack of dogs, ranging in size, begin to storm the alley recklessly. They all look angered and ready to bite anything that looked tasty. Inabi and his friends are astonished and frightened, the Nara clan along with his friend begin to run away down the opposite end of the alleyway while Inabi attempts the same thing but unable to do so due to his injury. The dogs huddle around Inabi and growl at him, scaring him to no end while Kakashi gets up and laughs quietly to himself.
“So, whats your name?” The small dog asks, to which Kakashi replies with his name while turning around and walking briskly away.
“Hey, hey, hey! I just saved you! I think you owe me some food for being such a good sport” The dog continues talking as Kakashi walks down the alleyway, shrugging his shoulders and replying “I could of handled it and besides, I have other things to do right now” The dog sat and looked on with curiosity while Kakashi strolled away.
“Heeeeeeeeey!!” The dog ran to the side of Kakashi and looked up at him “I’m Pakkun by the way”. Kakashi looked down at Pakkun as he tilted his Konoha headband down to cover his two tomoe Sharingan. Leaving the alleyway all together while the pack of dogs rip Inabi’s clothes to shreds in the background.
Contradictory to the alleyway, the thriving city of Konoha was full of light and cheerful faces. Kakashi and Pakkun walk through the bustling city while talking to eachother, though Kakashi isn’t in the mood for talking, Pakkun continues to lighten the mood with anything that comes to mind.
“A horse walks into a sake bar and the barman says—“ Slap. A leaflet hits him square in the face “Ah, Ah! Kakashi! Help I’m being assaulted by some sort of paper ninjutsu!” Kakashi looks down to his side at a hysterical Pakkun to notice a sheet of paper covering his face, he sighs and takes it off him and throws it back on the ground. Pakkun then chases after it to see what it was while Kakashi remains quiet, looking around subtly at everybody being jolly and generally happy. Pakkun then reappears at Kakashi’s side “Oh. Apparently a ramen shop is opening in autumn by this Ichiraku fellow, should we go when it’s open?” Kakashi doesn’t reply as his attention is fixed on a particular route leading to another end of Konoha. Kakashi speeds up his walk to head down this road.
“Damn it Kakashi! Stop just going off like that!”
A long and flowery road waits ahead, lined up with benches on each side of this pathway with an elderly couple sitting on one of them, feeding the birds with bread. Kakashi takes a deep breath and walks to the end of the long route, to a memorial in a distance with an array of colourful bouquets and arranged cards. Pakkun on the other hand, goes over to the elderly couple and sits along side them, barking sweetly in attempt to getting some food. The couple feed him a chunk of bread but in the corner of his eye, he notices Kakashi walking up to this memorial. “Kakashi! Don’t forget to tell me when you’re done!” He takes note of what Pakkun just said while the two old people look at the dog with a terrified look on their face. “What, you haven’t seen a talking dog before?” Pakkun said in retaliation to their reaction.
At the memorial, Kakashi notices Rin laying flowers at the foot of the stone. “I knew you’d come straight here Kakashi-kun” She quietly told Kakashi. After hearing this, he walks to the side of her, looking at the flowers. “I didn’t have the time to say thank you for the card you sent me” Calmly stated by Kakashi and quickly replied by Rin “It’s okay, I know you have other things on your—“ Kakashi interrupted Rin “I’ve been a fool Rin, I promised Obito that I would protect you, but ever since then, I’ve just been acting like a jerk…” replied straight after by Rin “It’s alright, you obviously need time, I don’t think any less of you Kakashi…” Rin and Kakashi then turned around to look at each other, Kakashi continued to talk “Obito always looked at you like you were a princess and now, with his eye, I will do the same…” Rin then blushed and looked down “Kakashi… You look worn out, As a princesses command, You should go get something to eat and rest” Rin looked back up with a smile, only to be replied by Kakashi smiling back, nodding and walking away and back down the road he once came down. Pakkun remained at the bench, though the couple have left but strangely left their bag of bread behind.
Kakashi strolls past the bench “Pakkun, you coming to get some grub or what?” Pakkun pops his head out of the bag of bread with crumbs all over his muzzle “Grub? I’m starving!” he hops down from the bench and once again, to the side of Kakashi as they now walk back to the city center of Konoha. Rin looks on, with a subtle smile and faint redness in the cheeks.
An adult Kakashi, now in his regular gear, picks up his dog wallet which is much like the frog wallet Naruto carries, from the small table that is beside the door and opens it to check how much he as and then soon enough, zipping it back up. He then opens the door to leave the apartment but looks back at the well lighten room, looking at the desk next to his bed and the picture that is placed upright of Team Minato, smiling gently and leaves, shutting the door behind him.
