There is popular misconception that people in One Piece don't die.
Here are few guys who are dead in OP:

Big Characters who are dead- Whitebeard, Ace, Gol D Roger

Marines who are dead-Bellamere, Jaguar D Saul

Villains who are most likely dead- Vergo, Monet, Shiki(if u count strong world canon)

Dead Characters who were related to MC - Zoro's GF, Ussop mum, Robins country, Brooks previous crew, Franky's teacher etc.

Dead characters who were related to side MC- Laws family, Rebecca's mum, Shirhoshi mum etc...

Not counting fodders who died during Impel down Arc,Marineford Arc, Alabasta Arc, Dressrosa Arc.

nah Oda doesn't like to kill characters off, right down to fodders. Most the deaths are in flashbacks, before the current timeline, those don't count.

That is One Piece's biggest downside is the handling of deaths. I'm fully expecting Vergo and Monet to be alive.

1990 anime?

The manga started in 1998, and the anime started in 1999. Anyway, go and watch the 2011 anime.

Read the first chapter then begun watching the 2011 anime.

After episode 23, read chapter 40 and 41.

After episode 27, read chapter 44.

After episode 77, read chapter 185 and 186.

After episode 100, read chapter 236.

After you finish the anime, watch the two movies. The Phantom Rouge and The Last Mission.

After you finish the movies, jump straight on chapter 340. Then read the two special chapters. Then proceed to chapter 341 and go on.

Most of the deaths were before op started, and the mostlikely dead might not be dead unless shown, its op afterall

That is One Piece's biggest downside is the handling of deaths.

Nope some of them died infront of Luffy like WB & Ace.

Some of them were killed by side characters like Yeti Brothers, Monet & Vergo

Some fodders were killed by Main villains like Doffy using Parasyte string & fodders were killing fodders in Dressrosa.

After Marineford lots of guys are dead.

I'm fully expecting Vergo and Monet to be alive.

Nope Monet is dead. Ceasar stabbed her heart & Vergo must be dead. That explosion destroyed Ceasar's lab & I m sure Doffy must have saw Marines report, "How many dead, how many injured" or he must have saw there bodies in PH.
