As he sang about the robust and voluptuous nature of a female’s lower anatomy, it caused me to pause and ask, “Are men predisposed to naturally like big buttocks and hips?” Does there exist, a psychological evolutionary mechanism that causes heterosexual men to be naturally drawn to such attributes or does it vary from culture to culture, or even from individual to individual. That's a great question. There has been research into this subject. What I can find is that men are indeed attracted to a certain waist to hip ratio (.7), indicating that men favor big hips/buttocks. Getting to your question about the physiological/evolutionary cause, it is hypothesized that there is one. In fact, there is evidence that early in our history, during periods of famine, women who were able to retain fat around there bottom were selected for because of their increased ability to birth children. It should be noted, however, that it is difficult, if not impossible, to prove an evolutionary relationship to human behavior. Reference:
