I knew that that's why I wondered why it seemed like people underestimate him in here.
I've heard the argument that itachi was a lil wore out from fighting guy n Kakashi n them but he still had Kisame to help so against jariya so that kinda makes up for it.
If itachi was stronger at that time it wasn't by much. But he was stronger then Kisame that shows it right there cuz it's believed itachi was stronger then Kisame. So in therory if itachi and jariya are close or even then that makes jariya stronger then Kisame.

Jiraya was one of the strongest ninja in Naruto verse and going toe to toe with Pain on his own turf without any knowledge about the abilities and techniques of the Rinnegan he was able to take 4 of the Pains itself is an big feat.

This is more than enough of a proof to say about his strength. And if he had known the secret of Nagato the result would have been a little different IMO.

Looks like I'm the only one who's going to point it out. Whilst it's true that Jiraiya is very OP, I think that Nagato saying Jiraiya would have defeated him is situational. First of all, there is a likelihood that Nagato via Chibaku Tensei could not do Chibaku Tensei cos he wasn't close enough, but even if he could, the reason Jiraiya would have won would be because his ultimate move - Frog Song, could take out all the 6 Pains and Nagato all at once but provided that Nagato didn't pull off something like Shinra Tensei or Chibaku Tensei first, which would absolutely demolish Jiraiya and he would have no way of countering that. So whilst his skills and Frog Song make him a very powerful shinobi with a high status, the time it takes to do it and the adequacy of his other moves as distractions, wouldn't help him against certain OP attacks that are below Nagato's level, e.g. Jinton.

Jiraiya said there were 2 times when he came on the verge of death first when tsunade beat him up and second when naruto went four tailed he beat up jiraiya pretty bad, he is strong but seeing how the four tailed naruto injured him he's not that strong
