Notice how Itachi and Kisame kept on saying "sannin, sannin". They were afraid of his hype, not him. When Itachi was running away from the toad mouth trap he could have turned around and one shotted him, but he never. So shhh. Itachi > Jiraiya.​

Itachi could not ignite sasuke with that jutsu and Jiraiya is faster than sasuke plus yes now that Jiraiya has seen amaterasu he would be prepared to obsorb that jutsu with a scroll just as Shikamaru was prepared with a water scroll against kakuzu. Shikamaru was just too slow but Jiraiya is faster than Shikamaru as well.

My next point is this... We are having a debate/discussion. Are you not capable of doing so without calling names like a child. At the end of the day these are our OPINIONS (though kishi already made it clear that Jiraiya would kill itachi and nagato). The name calling is ridiculous and uncalled for. jiraya is no where nearrrr as fast as sasuke are you on drugs bro sasukes speed has been hyped since part 1 jiraya has never been said to be fast in fact i think hes one of the slowest now that yu mention it smh your credibility just went out the window with that completely baseless assumption

It'd be a close match...BUT...Jiraiya would probably come out on top. Remember, he's one of the Sannin and has about 30 years of experience over Itachi. Let's explore, shall we?
Jiraiya comes across as weak only because of sheer circumstance; he was drugged by Tsunade during the fight against Orochimaru, he was up against two Akatsuki members (one of them being Itachi) while having to protect Naruto - who was their target - and Sasuke at the same time and still forced them to flee rather than fight, and he lost to Pain only because he didn't know the secret of Pain's techniques. Pain even said himself that Jiraiya would have won if he'd known. Also, the reason why he couldn't stop Orochimaru from leaving the village years ago was because he was younger with less experience, and because he was trying to bring Orochimaru back alive, so he couldn't use his full strength.
Itachi is a master of Genjutsu, and would likely try to trap Jiraiya in an illusion. But, wasn't Jiraiya the one that taught Naruto how to break Genjutsu? Who then used it to break an illusion created by Itachi? True, it was a clone with 30% power, but Naruto was only a genin and still managed to break out using the technique Jiraiya taught him.
Furthermore, Jiraiya can summon the Elder Toads, who both specialise in Genjutsu and can be used against Itachi. The genjutsu they used could kill anyone who heard the sound of their warbling, which was very loud. Jiraiya could use them to back him up, as well as all the other toads.
Itachi is a legendary ninja with significant skill, but Jiraiya is as well. He's infamous. Plus, he has the Rasengan and his oil techniques. A testament to Jiraiya's skill is this; he's had five students; Naruto, Minato, Konan, Yahiko, and Nagato. All of them have grown up to be incredible ninja with massive power, particularly Naruto, Minato, and Nagato (who is quite possibly the strongest Shinobi in history (barring Hashirama, Madara, and the SO6P)).
So, all in all, it'd be a very close match, but I reckon if they were both going all out, Jiraiya would probably win.

I reckon at the very least it is a stalemate. When people say claim that we have not seen enough of Jiraya's powers (when we have seen enough) it is only logical to go by hype - cause there is a reason that hype exists. Anyway, some people say that the only reason Jiraya is strong is because of Sage Mode. Are you kidding me. The reason he is strong is cause he has a hax technique - that is his fault? How is that different to Itachi's Mangekyou Sharingan? Both had to train a fair amount to become proficient enough wielders of their respective hax techs. Like many have already stated, pain admitted HIMSELF that with more sufficient prior knowledge, he could have defeated him. Him - a Rinnegan wielder, of considerable skill. Also, itachi claims that the best he could do was stale mate - thus at the very least, these 2 legends are on equal footing. I mean, we have to take in to account what the characters themselves say - I mean, we cant say they are lying - there has to be a line drawn somewhere right...

Admitting someone can beat you is not lieing.. it is the sole truth..And it is that person's judgement on that specific person. Pein is no need to be overrated.. If Jiraya had knew about the secert and how they worked.. then Jiraya would have pawned pain's ass. why? because Jiraya's sage mode is more reliable then Naruto's due to the Fusion with the elder toads.

Tobi in normal form is overrated. Konan effed him up. Tobi might have been the boss but he was the 3rd or 4th rated strongest before all his upgrades.

Lol. the second part about jman beating pain, I already said that so you're agreeing with me. tobi can be overrated to a degree, he's one of the main villains and konan messing him up was cool and all but she had a lot of prep time.

I don't think there is an absolute level for strength in shinobi world. Two shinobi ca fight each other several times and one or the other may win each time. Body -brain -jutsu- intention - luck! All of them are important. We saw that pain was wary of Jiraya but on the other hand the master was killed by him as the battle field was Pain's territory.
For example, Naruto wasn't obviously stronger than Nagato, but his intentions saved everyone.
