Are any of you guys learning or want to learn Japanese? I'm learning it in college right now. I'm in my second semester of it. I absolutely love it. Kanji makes it tough but super interesting. Hopefully I'll get to a point where I can watch anime without subs. That'd be sick. :yay:

How long did it take you to learn it/become fluent? How many Kanji do you know?

I recommend Chinese, because they are going to rule Japan and the world's economy again.
Japan's economy is doing shit right now.
Well Kanji (a major alphabet in Japanese) uses Chinese characters, so in a roundabout way, I am kind of learning Chinese.

China is a tornado on the precipice, nothing more.

And what does "they are going to rule Japan and the world's economy again." They never did in the first place, they've always had their behinds royally handed to them.

Plus, Japan's economy is starting to re-gain ground.

I learnt by direct exposure on a fairly regular basis so I don't know how many kanji I know and I couldn't tell you how long it took for me to get to a point where I didn't have many problems. All I know is that it's rare for me to get stuck nowadays.

Languages are my forte anyway, so I got to conversational level fairly quickly.

Fluently, and can you write? I know some.

OT: I do not know enough to get by OP. Eventually I'll plan on learning Chinese and Japanese because I'll be traveling later on in my life to those two countries to study various martial arts. I know Cambodian and Thai decently because of my dad's side of my family and fluent enough to get by in Spanish. Nothing much else.

Not taking any class for it atm, but I hope to someday. For now, I'll just learn a little bit by watching subbed anime.

That's awesome. Lucky you. I might try to learn another language after Japanese. Seeing videos of polyglots is crazy. It'd be awesome to be conversational in at least 3 languages other than English. I guess that's my goal.

Still, that's 3 languages plus English. That's crazy.

That'll definitely help in learning some vocabulary. It's cool to be able to watch anime and check that the subs match what's being said. I can't do that for an entire episode or anything, but I'll get there. lol

That sounds like a lot of fun...

Good luck on your journeys ! :yeah:

Unfortunately, I've never learnt Japanese, although now I want too. In high school, Japanese was one of the 2nd language choices we had, but I elected to do German, because I thought it would be easiest of all the choices.

But, I do want to learn Japanese some day. Maybe I should start by paying more attention to subs like someone above me said?

Yessssss.

That's actually the main reason I went. But I kind of fell for Japan so my prior reason became just a reason.

Japanese was the easiest for me.

Mandarin Chinese wasn't so fun. Then again, I had a teacher for that and he was more interested in teaching us Tai Chi but goddamn, he was impressive with the ol' circular moves. Okay I admit, the lessons were fun.
