Tolkien with out a doubt. Martin is amazing dont get me wrong but Tolkiens imagination and creativity is unparalleled. Martin has said himself he looks up to Tolkien and appreciates his work.

I love Game of Thrones, I think it's the best TV show made and the Fire and Ice Song series is among some of the best fantasies.

But Tolkien started all of it. He was what made Fantasy what it is today. Without question he will remain the greatest.

Never gotten into LoTR when I tried but I have read GRRMs short stories of 1000 world universe and books from ASoIF. They are deep and complex not generic good vs evil stories. Never found anything exceptionally great about Tolkien, I see a lot of people aggressively telling tolkien is the greatest.

Same, never got into LOTR books and movies, I've watched the movies, but I was bored most of the time. While ASoIaF is the best work of fiction I've read and watched.
