I dont get why Itachi wouldnt just sit the Uchihas down and say "hi guys...erm listen if you dont cut the crap....well your all going to get minced....so...ye...have a good think...and get back to me...alright" i mean...wouldnt the "greater good" be to spare as many lives as possible? Instead of going ape all over his family :S just a though

Uchiha clan didn't listen to him, that is why Itachi said in the manga "I have lost all hope for this pathetic clan" and threw a kunai on an uchiha symbol.
Itachi was a pacisifist who hated war, he was forced to choose between two evils, he chose the lesser evil and came up with a plan to make his little beloved brother stronger and have him become to hero of the leaf and cleance the name of the Uchiha clan.
However, Madara didn't let that happen
Beautifull storyline, without the Uchiha's, Naruto wouldn't be Naruto.

Naruto is about storyline, we can see and exeperience the story through the different perspectives and personalities of the characters and their situation.

@OT - Itachi was different from the rest of the Uchiha Clan, they want power he wants peace. Sasuke could have been Itachi v2 but hatred turned him into some douchebag.

Upon thinking about the Uchiha massacre, I have a harder time seeing Itachi as some selfless martyr. He had no problem killing little kids and elderly people and even his own parents. No matter what the situation is, why would he need to kill harmless people like his own mother? I have a hard time seeing any mentally sane man kill his own mother for any reason, and on top of that, it doesn't even seemed to have bugged him. He could kill everyone else's little brother, yet he made an exception for himself.

if he were to let anyone live (aside from sasuke because he made arrangements for him) the coup d'etat plot would be revealed and the remaining uchihas would have to be punished.

Good point actually, but it wouldn't bug me if I actually saw him mourn his fellow Uchiha, Sasuke seems to be the only one he cared about, but maybe he just can't feel anything after having to kill his clan? I just wish I could see some kind of introspection of Itachi or else it almost seems like he did it roboticly. :shrug:
