I'm torn because blood is thicker than water so why pick a village that ostracized(to corner of the village) & subjugated your clan and turn them into menial police officers. There's not one Uchiha that's an elder or is on the Konoha committee or whatever. On the other hand a civil war would cripple the clan and the village and may just result in konoha being taken over by another village. I would much rather go out like a man with my Susanoo, SoT, MoY, and spamming amaterasu. But I see why he did what he did.

This is a double edged sword. Itachi has no choice. If he sided with Uchiha, the Uchiha will be destroyed by the Village. (Remember the Konoha has many other powerful tribes like Nara, Hguuya, etc...) And contrary to many think, not all Uchiha are created equal. Only a handful of them have the MS and can use Amaratsu, Susano etc. There is no other indication that other Uchiha has that aside from Itachi and Shisui. Say how somehow they survive the Village, they be in weaken state and other powerful village will take advantage of the situation and can take over. In the end the result will be the same, the Uchiha will be left without a village to live and rule and live day by day in the war.
Itachi sided with the Village and spare his brother life. At least his brother will be saved from the misery of the war and many inocents life will be saved. And the Uchiha will have its honor. You also have to look at the anime from Asian perspective. In Asian culture, family honor means everything.
In the end this come down to your morale. Just because they are your family doesn't mean what they going to do is 'Right'. You cannot turn a blind eyes on a possible massacre of many peoples. Say If you know ur family is plotting to bomb a school and kill many kids, are u just going to sit there and do nothing??? Even if you turn ur family to police, you will still feel guilty about not siding with ur family. This is what Itachi feel and decided to live with the decision. Rember his Dad said to him, 'Our pain will only last a moment, while your pain will last forever'. He took the path of a lesser evil. I doubt not many will be able to do that.

Well that is what Minato intend to do, but so did Kyubi know that and try to kill Naruto. He died saving Naruto life before the seal is complete. I supposed he could have teleport to Naruto, save him and teleport again to another place, but he run out of charkla to do another jump.

It was to save more lives. Many, many more lives. If he did that then a civil war would start, then the Uchiha would be wiped out anyway, then world war, then Konoha would be destroyed.
Itachi chose peace intead of absolute destruction.
And Itachi loved Konoha more than anything except for Sasuke.

as to Itachi, he was a 13 year old kid backed into a corner by his family, shisui, and danzo. and he probably made the right choice, at least he got to save sasuke. his mistake really was scarring sasuke instead of trusting him, that's where all his plans failed. he didn't have a true choice in the rest

I suggest you read manga again, and believe what you saw.
its a matter of kill or be killed for itachi. danzou knew about the ongoing plan of coup de etat, and danzo threaten itachi that if he don't stop his clan he will be annihilated along with sasuke and his clan,yup, konoha will annihilate the uchiha clan. but if itachi chose to do it himself he can atleast spare his beloved brother sasuke. Unfortunately, itachi KNEW they cannot defeat konoha, that is why he was forced to do it himself obviously. he even seeks help with the mask man to accomplish it because again, itachi knew it will be a tough mission and he can't do it by himself.
