Itachi or Shikamaru

You could make solid arguments for both. Personally seeing how Shikamaru planned out the deaths of Hidan and Kakazu while grieving Asuma's death and only with limited interaction is one of the most impressive things I've read in Naruto. Obviously Itachi is my favorite character, but Shikamaru isn't bad either.

That's why Shikamaru has plans after plans in case it fails which makes him the better choice. Plus Shikamaru is still alive and would only get better and surpass his dad some day. When Asuma died, he stepped up and his dad just died.

O/t: I say shikamaru, he is said to plan out 200 alternative strategies that's ridiculous. Plus shika doesn't have any insight advantages like the sharingan yet he still easily on itachi's level - which would make him overall better.

Shikamaru is a better strategist but he lacks in power/stamina. Itachi is an all around fighter high intelligence along with Justus strong enough where he can do brute force attacks to find openings. Itachi has another unique ability where he can read and feed off of a persons emotions, playing with their psyche with only words and metaphors.

The thing is, Itachi plan failing shows he's not better, Shikamaru has plans after plans in case one fails which is much better than relying on just one plan. Shikamaru came up with a plan on a way to fight Kakuza and Hidan and even adjusted it to fit Kakashi who joined last minute

Shikamaru can come up with plans in an instant. He's way above Itachi at this aspect.

True, but if a plan doesn't succeed was it even a plan worth planning. That'd be like saying "I plan to run three miles" then running 30 steps and still expecting people to give you credit because you planned to run.

itachi is one of the dumbest charatcers in the series. he has a goal but no plans. and no real sense. i mean he says he wants something done but fails to take into account that just because he wants to fight his brother doesnt mean his brother will survive every single other threat he comes across or that the village would be like "yeah sure come right in".
hell he told kabuto his plan to his face and enabled kabuto to counter it. DUMBASS.
