^Pretty much this. His staged fight against Hebi Sasuke was a win as well, since the outcome went according to his plan. It would be more of a loss if he accidently killed Sasuke by not holding back enough, if he died due to his illness before Sasuke could encounter him, if someone managed to kill Sasuke before his fight could come to fruition, anything of that nature. That would be terrible.

I find it pretty convenient that Itachi never came into contact with Edo Madara/the juubi/Obito during the war arc because if he did totsuka blitz would have ended the war and Kishi would have been able to save himself 100 chapters worth of ink.
