Itachi sacrificed the entire Uchiha clan in order to prevent war and stop Sasuke from becoming evil and setting out to avenge his clan that would certainly have been annihilated by those that stood against their coup d' etat.

Unfortunately, Sasuke's vengeful destiny still remained unchanged and war waged... eventually.

He also stopped the Edo Tensei, but the most threatening summon, Madara, remained alive and can take out most of the entire Allied Shinobi Force.

But, he was still credited as a guy who protected the shinobi world- if the Konoha found out that the person who canceled the jutsu was the traitor, Uchiha Itachi and learned of all the sacrifices he gave, they might consider him greater than the Hokages- therefore, he isn't hopeless and is the first shinobi in the entire world to do something of that nature.

Of course, Naruto will be greater than Itachi when it comes down to who is the greatest hero, but as of now, Itachi is the one who holds the title and I'm really looking forward to the village finding out about him. :D

What do you think?

- Sasuke is evil
- Tobi is still alive
- Orochimaru is still alive
- Madara is still around

Doesn't seem that successful to me...

He is a failure as a brother by his own admission, but as a leaf shinobi, he is far from a failure and if it wasn't for Madara's deus ex machina, he would have been the hero of the shinobi world.

He didn't complete his goals with Sasuke, and that's a cold, cold fact.

Of course he's not. If it wasn't for him the battlefield would still be swamped with edos. Also Sasuke would have been taken over by Oro a while back.

Orochimaru unsealed.
Sasuke evil.
Edo Madara still around.
Konoha to be destroyed by Sasuke.
Tobi alive.

...and in the end, he only postponed the 4th shinobi world war, didn't fully prevent it.

either itachi or shisui would be hokage right now if danzo didn't take shisui's eyes or if danzo didn't tell itachi to kill his whole clan i think hiruzen is smart enough to have made either of those excelent shinobi's the hokage

When he got out of edo control he was going to stop Kabuto and I think he did a good job

Itachi is in no way a failure besides a brother. He failed Sasuke (at least in his own words) but besides that I can't think of anywhere else I would consider him a failure

Yeah, his motifs were unsuccessful, but he's not a failure.

How does that make any sense? He was unsuccessful with basically everything he set out to do, yet he's not a failure? He's a good man, don't get me wrong, but, on the whole, he has failed.

Nearly all the edo's were already seal, he missed the most important do which was Madara but I guess stopping Chiyo and Kimmimaro from killing fodder was a good job. :|

Well, that's not confirmed anymore.

His contributions to the shinobi world and the village makes him> most Kages; therefore, he's not a failure. People like you call him a failure because everything he said he intended to do turned out to be a fail. He's far from a failure, though.

He prevented a civil war. Ok.

- He tried to seal Orochimaru away forever; Fail.
- He tried to mould his brother into a hero; Fail.
- He tried to take out Tobi with a cowardly Amaterasu after he had died; Fail.
- He ended Edo Tensei, but only managed to remove about 4 from play; Fail.
- The main threat, Madara, is still around; Fail.
- By his own admission, he failed.

He may be a 'hero', but he still failed.
