Itachi sacrificed the entire Uchiha clan in order to prevent war and stop Sasuke from becoming evil and setting out to avenge his clan that would certainly have been annihilated by those that stood against their coup d' etat.
Unfortunately, Sasuke's vengeful destiny still remained unchanged and war waged... eventually.
He also stopped the Edo Tensei, but the most threatening summon, Madara, remained alive and can take out most of the entire Allied Shinobi Force.
But, he was still credited as a guy who protected the shinobi world- if the Konoha found out that the person who canceled the jutsu was the traitor, Uchiha Itachi and learned of all the sacrifices he gave, they might consider him greater than the Hokages- therefore, he isn't hopeless and is the first shinobi in the entire world to do something of that nature.
Of course, Naruto will be greater than Itachi when it comes down to who is the greatest hero, but as of now, Itachi is the one who holds the title and I'm really looking forward to the village finding out about him.
What do you think?
