Itachi is basically the Narutoverse's answer to BATMAN.

Itachi's ONLY action of any real positive impact on the world is releasing the Edo Tensei, and he had no way of knowing he would ever get the opportunity to. If he HADN'T been resurrected, or if Naruto has locked eyes with Sasuke's EMS before seeing his MS, he would have been just another Edo.

His use of Kotoamatsukami also saved Naruto and Bee, and by chain reaction, Sasuke (and probably Kabuto too.) And thus, more or less, saved the world. His actions in life were also more aimed toward prevention. He kept Obito and Akatsuki at bay until he died, and he was more or less passing on the torch upon his death: to Sasuke and Naruto. Sure, Sasuke was manipulated by Obito the moment Itachi wasn't around to keep Obito in line, but Itachi anticipated that, and even though Kotoamatsukami was used in an unorthodox fashion, the end result was still the same.

What happened after his death was not anything Itachi could have predicted, but I agree that it has not exactly HURT.
