I think it is genjutsu as he had died, but Itachi is one of my favourite characters and it would be great if he returned.

Very true! He was on the verge of death as it is when he was fighting sasuke.So he could be a zombie but who knows.

Sasuke saw Itachi die, that doesn't mean he is absolutly sure he is completley dead. Also, Zetsu said that Itachi hadn't died yet, whose to say its not some jutsu alot like the one in the Rescue Gaara saga, when Pain made those fake ones. Whatever the case, we never died see:
1. What happened to Itachi's body
2. If he was surely dead
3. Sasuke take Itachi's eyes.

Also, this is just a theory, what if it was actually Itachi the whole time acting as Sasuke. You know, Sasuke probably would have gladly taken Itachi's eyes in search of power, if he absolutly fully understood that Itachi lived his whole life for Sasuke. Since Sasuke want to destroy Konoha and all wouldn't that have worked? Just a theory, i have doubts my self, but just something that came to mind. Also if you noticed in the new manga, all the crows came from Sasuke and all that.

Just theories and crap. Everyone probably has a different idea in mind

1.) Madara(or tobi) has Itachi's body. If you read on later Saskue will ask Madara for his eye and after the transplant he claims that he can fill itachi's power running through him.

2.) Right back to 1. I think Itachi would feel his eyes being gouge out.

3.) At first Saskue hated the idea of taking Itachi's eyes but after fighting Danzo, Killer Bee and the Kages he was beginning to lose sight so he changed his mind.

itachi is my fave character too!! you have no idea how much i want him alive! but if he's not dead then he wouldn't be resurrected by kabuto's jutsu.. still, no harm hoping

but he was revived with the other members of akatsuki that naruto defeat them in a battle later by kabuto
