Itachi is a coward?

He didnt chose not to resolve things with his clan, it was past that point. His clan were in the end stages of planning their coup de tat and Konoha was getting ready to come down on them. He knew that he couldnt convince his claim to stop because they were too prideful, exemplified by the speech he gives the Uchiha that accuse him of killing Shishui, and he knew if they went ahead with the coup they would all die and many innocents would have been killed in the process. So he chose to safe the pride of his family and his little brother. Less they go down in history as corrupt power hungry traitors.

they wanted to go down in histroy as revolutionaries fighting a corrupt power hungry government. itachi stole that right from them by refusing to just tell everyone this.
innocents died regardless since itachi committed genocide. how is killing EVERY uchiha stopping the coup? killing only half or so would do the trick nicely.
he had no right to decide their fate for them and decide how they want to be remembered

He let Sasuke live in hatred for 2 reasons:

that is a poor excuse. he condemned sauske to UTTER ****ING MISERY AND PAIN FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE for that? to be proud of being the only one left of his clan? who are fukin dead and never coming back? no one wants to be in that position. to be utterly alone.
even after knowing everything sauske still loved his family. because theyre his fukin family!

if he hadnt left then Sasuke would have known what his family were plotting against the leaf and would have been shamed

again theyre his family and he deserves to know everything. they would have told him themselves if sasuke was a little older. and hell he might have actually agreed and vowed to support those revolutionary beliefs. then whats itachi gonna do. oh right brainwash and enslave sasuke and forcibly make sasuke do what he wants and not what sasuke wants. this is selfish and insane. he cant handle the fact that things dont always go his way and that maybe the leaf isnt that nice of a place.

He needed Sasuke be strong as many people would have attempted to kidnap or kill him just to get his Sharingan, Orochimaru is a prime example.

sasuke can be strong without hatred. did hashirama need hatred to become as strong as he became? did minato? did shisui? did third raikage? all these legendary ninjas and not one of them needed to be tortured, humiliated and beat the fuk down to become powerful.
also sasuke can take care of himself. he had hiruzen there. adnd as it turns out, orochimarus plan to take sasuke only failed because SASUKE WAS TRAINING WITH KAKASHI and beat gaara down. to be calm and methodical and skilled. not a blood hungry hatred filled maniac.

Admittedly Itachi questions whether the choices he made were really the correct ones, but all in all he had no options and no time.

Its hard to question the judgement of a person under that kind of pressure.

its easy to actually. itachi chose consciously to brutally torture and mindrape an innocent screaming young boy. thats what he chose to fukin do

ok. so therefore itachi killed orochimaru, kabuto, obito and kisame. too evil, save lives kinda thing? he wasnt gonna be trusted by obito anyway so his role as a spy was useless. might as well take down as many as he can.

Doesn't change the fact he saved their lives. Whether they know it or not, he is a hero to them.

possibly. or possibly someone else could just take out the ringleaders and make a deal with the uchiha survivors to surrender. you know...like a sensible ruler of a city would do.
also save them from what? the war happened anyway. mostly because itachi did nothing about orochimaru till it was too late. hiruzens blood is on itachis hands.

He chose quantity over quality

ok. so what about all the other villains that itachi did not take down? orochimaru, zabuza, danzo, sasuke etc. was he saving lives by letting them run rampant and massacre innocents?
itachi is a coward. he is only able and willing to kill sleeping defenceless men and women. and even then betrays their memory by painting a false ideal of what they were like instead of the brave revolutionaries they actually were.
he stood by and watched as danzos corruption destroyed konoha.

Itachi was confronted with many choices, but he chose the the most obvious and the only choice he thought he had. He did make the "easy" decision at this point in his life.

It was said he had the mind of a Kage at an extremely young age and there is no doubt he was one of the strongest Uchiha as well. He could have been influential amongst his clan, tried to solve the situation with his mind, or bring revolution upon Danzo. Itachi was tasked with Genocide, not protecting his idea of the Leaf. He chose the way that forced the 'solution' upon others, which is why he lived in solitude and regret.

Imagine Naruto or Minato in place of Itachi faced with Danzo's offer. Then understand that Itachi was in the position to achieve a better outcome.

Truth is, Itachi WAS a hero. His actions were a necessary evil at the time. He didn't attack the other Akatsuki because he was a SPY, who was supposed to stay undercover. Now stop whining.
