There are zero chance he was talking about power since a)He never even met or knew Itachi b)Hashirama is now being praised as The God of Shinobi (yes, even tho Edo Hiruzen is there too).Plus if it wasnt obvious before it should be now, everyone who is after power goes for Hashirama´s cells(DNA).
And apparently he is resisting Oro´s Edo Tensei by power or will alone (Not using Koto Amatsukami or someone elses powers)´, so i would say it has become completely clear why Madara kept saying Hashirama this Hashirama that, Hashirama is the only one who could ever beat me, the powers of the other kage´s(Tsunade,Onoki,A,Gara,Mei) were a joke compared to Hashirama etc etc.
I like Itachi, he was really powerful,smart,knowledgeable,wise,level headed and all that BUT to say he was even close to The First powerwise is just ridiculous.
Couldn´t say it better myself, Hashirama meant Itachi´s way of the ninja.He was merely stating how admirable that was.After he heard all about Itachi´s sacrifices and devotion for his village (the concept of protecting one´s village is really important for a true shinobi), so the First is just praising one who complete embodies the very essence of what a shinobi should be.
