I'm not one who will call Itachi the "most powerful" character in the manga, but these days people on the base keep downgrading his ability with tons of negato/naruto/tobi >>> itachi threads I just cant help voicing my opinion on this.
People keep saying in their fight against negato it was "3 against 1" so Itachi only kinda helped out, but please reread chapter 551 carefully and follow the sequence of events. Most readers here seem to only remember the big combo of rasenshuriken+tbb+yasaka's magatama, but that was only to destroy the chibaku tensei, NOT what defeated negato. Negato was defeated only because 1. Itachi COUNTERED the supposedly perfect "shared field of vision" with his shuriken skill 2. Susanoo's sealing sword. In fact when Itachi rescued Naruto and Bee with his susanoo, you can see he already completed step 1 without Negato even realizing it happening (don't say it's because naruto and bee were distracting Negato, because Negato has always depended on his "shared field of vision" for combat responsiveness, instead of, say, staring at his opponents), meaning if Itachi didnt have to rescue Naruto and Bee from getting their souls eaten up, he could've ended the fight right there with his Totsuka sword from behind before Negato even had a chance to use Chibaku Tensei, for Negato had no way of detecting the attack with his field of vision compromised.
When many people on the base go on about their immensely flawed "ranking" (a concept which is arguably not compatible with this world kishimoto is building by definition anyway) , all they got to give Itachi was a list of "amaterasu, susanoo, tsukoyomi, yata's mirror" etc. Yet if you have really paid attention to the manga, you should know that Itachi's real power is his skill with whatever abilities he has access to, and a calm mind to form seamless strategy whatever situation he finds himself in (similar to how Naruto's real power being his conviction and persistance, not just kurama). A random ninja with Itachi's eyes would NOT be his equavalent. Think back on what zetsu says about a master throwing a pebble being more lethal than a rookie's kunai.
Itachi himself would be the last person to tell you he's invincible. But I wouldn't really bet against him when he is on a mission to hunt down any individual, for Itachi's shown himself to be the type of assassin who will almost always find a way to get it done, and when you think carefully on what kind of tools he has access to, what his "pebbles" actually are, you should really fear for whoever his target is.
That is... unless the target's edo madara, for at this point it seems betting on anybody against edo madara is about the same as when you cheered for all your favorite heroes during World War Hulk...
