Itachi got Kabuto under Izanami. THe reason he made him release Edo Tensei immediately was that Izanami was breakable. Meanwhile, he could control Kabuto. For example, make him open his eyes so that Itachi could hit him with Tsukiyomi.
That would give him enough time to give Sasuke the lecture he gave Naruto, which would prevent him from going all evil.

Sure, the 5 kages would have been even more curbstomped then they actually were, and Sasuke wouldn't have revived Orochimaru causing the Juubi to kill everyone with the Bijuudama, but at least sasuke wouldn't have gone all evil.

Itachi is extremely powerful, he could have done a lot of useful things. But it isn't the job of the dead to take care of the living's problems. Those are something they need to overcome by themselves as you shouldn't rely on people of the past.
