... Are both good characters, imo.

Honestly, the weird Obito vs Itachi war going on right now kind of fails to acknowledge that both characters are worthwhile and interesting. I'm a huge fan of both of them, and it pains me to see so many people going at it over which one's better, especially when they kind of fit together as opposites.

Itachi's one of the story's most unique characters. He's a hero playing a villainous role, and not even in the typical way. I've always found it particularly interesting that, although he was literally acting like a villain while being good all along, he played a directly 'villainous' role. What I'm saying is, Itachi ****ed up majorly. Manipulating Sasuke took his brother down a dark, vengeful path, and although it did make him physically stronger, his mental state quickly deteriorated. That being said, he admits that he messed up, and he admits that his plan was a failure. Itachi's a humble character, despite his power, skill, and wisdom.

Obito, on the other hand, is just as arrogant and deluded as the man who trained him. Even when his plan is totally ****ing insane, he says it's best for the world and that he's only trying to save everyone. In reality, his motives are selfish and based around his own despair and ever-growing madness. It's a sort of opposite to Itachi's confession of his own faults. Although Obito was eventually redeemed, his tenure as a villain was defined by his inability to accept the selfishness of his goals, whereas Itachi had no trouble accepting his faults.

Basically, Obito and Itachi are opposites, but both are unique and interesting in their own right. Kishi made a huge mistake when he didn't have them meet up.

... and I know this thread won't do anything to quell the argument, but I figured I might as well post up my own thoughts, being a fan of both characters.

Pay no mind. The Obito vs Itachi war is just something IB decided to start, I know this for a fact. Won't be long until I wipe them all out :coffee:

OT:
Meh I dont care for Obito though.

I actually like Obito and Itachi. Just Obito being my 2nd-3rd favorite and Itachi being the 7-8th. :|

I agree with everything, except that Obito's character was ruined when he took of his mask.

His reason for the war and obsession for Rin (who in his mind was still a young girl) completely destroyed his character. And also the fact that he is the "coolest guy"

TBH i don't think you can compare the two

The reason was much more complex than that but ok...........

Agreed. Obito's reasoning for the war was much more complex than people seem to figure. Personally, I think it was the childhood tragedy of losing his friends, then going back to see one friend kill another, that started him down his path... Madara being the one to train him only made it worse. It's not necessarily clear-cut, though, and people are free to interpret it however they want, even if that interpretation makes Obito seem a lot more foolish.

Itachi is a better character than Obito. The reason for why he made all those "bad" things is selfless, while Obito almost destroyed Konoha and killed many innocents because of his selfish feeling of loving delusion. That's why Obito is bashed a lot.

And I find the Obito vs Itachi threads quite funny. I think this is one of the few debatable rivalries, since both are very strong and never fought each other.

I'm not sure if Itachi is an objectively better character, but I agree on all other counts. Itachi's selflessness compared to Obito's selfishness is what makes them interesting as opposites in my mind. A fight between them would also be interesting... it's honestly too bad nobody seems willing to talk reasonably about it.

I'm a genuine Itachi fan but sometimes I do side with Obitobase even though he's not close to being a likable character for me...

This is just a mad war, both sides trying to downplay the other... And meanwhile damaging their own fav's reputation...

I don't see how that makes him a better character. It makes him a good guy, not a better character. There's a difference.

Hell no. Itachi's character is way better. I can go into detail too, but I'll save it for another time :snick:

you seem to have a rather false understanding of Obito. He was never selfish, actually he is the exact opposite of selfish, as a kid he gave up his life to save his friend, and when he saw that friend(kakashi) kill his other best friend(rin) under the circumstances that could not be avoided, He lost his faith in humanity.

Obito is the exact opposite of selfish, his selflessness got to the point where he no longer cared about his own identity, his name, his face....and only cared about his goal (which was to achieve world peace via IT).

He considered himself a nobody, He never looked for a praise or glory. What kind of selfish person does that?

He was always true to himself, and if he hasn't met Naruto and saw someone like his old self and someone who never gives up hope.....Obito would've never turned *good*, and quite frankly he would've fked the ninja world by now.

Obito was the true antagonist of this manga, countering every ideal of its protagonist (Naruto) even more so than Sasuke or Madara (who hardly saw anything outside Hashi's wood*)

Itachi has nothing on Obito, don't get me wrong...Itachi was a good character but comparing him to Obito is like comparing Yamcha to Vagetta.

Obito's role in the manga far out weighs that of Itachi.

You know, I think you're right on all counts. I haven't looked at Obito's character in a while, and you've brought to light some of his more interesting and complex elements that must have totally slipped my mind. You've honestly got me there, my understanding of Obito has faltered quite a bit.

I don't think he's entirely selfless by this point, though. Rin's death clearly had a huge effect on him, particularly because it was Kakashi killing her. It's his personal trauma and his experiences that tell him that he lives in a world of hatred. Obito doesn't really seem to keep other people in mind, and is all too willing to kill everyone for the sake of bringing about a new world.

I think he's a little bit of both, not fully selfish or selfless. He's clearly driven by his traumatic experiences, but he's kept quite a bit of his childhood compassion with him, no matter how twisted it's gotten along the way.

... Also, I'm glad we can agree that Obito is the real main villain of the manga. Madara didn't really counteract Naruto in the way Obito did, and Kaguya didn't even really try.

I think the big issue between the two characters is powerscaling.

So when none agrees, they start listing each characters flaws.

Controversial would fit in better than calling them as 'good' characters

Most Itachi fans don't like Obito and vice-versa, and that's because of the rivalry the fanbases created between them. So to praise one, they must degrade the other, and that's how the everlasting fan-war begins.
