Itachi was afraid/hesitant to fight Jiraiya (even with Kisame) & Jiraiya was straight forward defeated by Nagato.

Also it took Itachi, Naruto & Bee altogether to defeat Nagato even when he was under control of Kabuto so imagine if Nagato is not under anyone' s control then how much damage he would cause no matter whatever jutsu Itachi uses.

edo nagato being stronger because absorbing bee/hachibi's chakra. if bee never gettin close to nagato , nagato would never avoid amaterasu since he cannot move at all<<<<< HE DOES BIRD SUMMONING DUDE and that's lame, amaterasu is very fast, only v2 raikage could avoid it. even on full chakra potent, he's still lack of mobility, that's how totsuka stabbed him. Without absorbing bee chakra he was died by only AMATERASU. that's fact. just face it. itachi is smarter than nagato in manyways, nagato just has much much more firepower , thanks to rinnegan and his experience with it. his shinra tensei is BADASS, could push three big summons, could FLATTEN entire village. but it has a weakness , DELAY. and itachi is not that fool , not to analyze shinra weakness point. itachi even analyze Chibaku Tensei, which he was only seeing it once in a lifetime. damn how quick.

I'd be hesitant to kill a fellow leaf shinobi and cripple the military force of the village I was secretly protecting too.

Also Bee and Naruto (other then the attack on chibaku tensei) stood there and got owned and were more of hindrance then a help, Itachi had to save them.

It also depends on whether or not Nagato has full mobility in their match up, that was a huge hindrance for Nagato in that encounter. Another unknown factor is the effect of genjutsu on Nagato, we saw he(or atleast the paths) was susceptible to the auditory genjutsu of the toad duet but visual genjutsu remains unknown, though many assume Nagato is immune to such tactics that assumption has little basis. Another factor is prior knowledge, if itachi has prior knowledge on Chibaku Tensei he may be able to stop the jutsu with his own attack (without assistance from bee/naruto) if he attacks the center of the jutsu before it has time to encase itself in much rubble.
