But Nagato and Orochimaru did, and as the leader of the Akatsuki and one of the Legendary three informed everyone how strong Jiraiya is.

I'm fairly certain that hints at the fact that Orochimaru and Itachi had clashed before, or their first encounter wasn't as cut and dry as we are to believe.

As for Jiraiya, it was probably just something to hype the character up. Kisame had no doubt or fear in his mind when he fought with Killer Bee, who he knew was a Perfect Jin. I don't think he would honestly run away from Jiraiya WITH Itachi there too.

OT: Without Edo's, most likely the Sannin at a very high diff. Itachi and Kisame have clashing styles and until Itachi dies, Kisame can't go all out. And, if Jiraiya can make it into Sage Mode he could potentially remove Samehada from the battle.

It comes down to team work; which the Legendary Sannin are far better with working with each other. Their attack styles don't hinder each other, whereas Itachi would be equally hurt by a large lake being spit up, Water Dome, and most standard jutsu for Kisame.

Without edos, I'd say Jiraiya and Tsunade are the only problems. Orochimaru for some reason is weak to everything Itachi has. Tsunade can get hurt by kisame, but jiraiya, with the toad genjutsu not restricted.. mid-high diff, either side.

This. For both Itachi and Kisame to admit inferiority to Jiraiya with their combined efforts doesn't make any logical sense.

For one, Orochimaru admitted inferiority to Itachi alone [

] I understand that A>B>C logic doesn't apply to Naruto; but if "Itachi + Kisame < Jiraiya" were to be true, then that would mean Jiraiya is tires above Orochimaru. And the Sannin were portrayed to be more or less equals.

Second, Itachi is a massive liar. He had no real desire in capturing the kyuubi. Reason why he opted to retreating so quickly; resulting in Kisame questioning his choices.

Orochimaru isnt "weak" to everything Itachi has. Genjutsu, esepciially at the range Orochimaru, can catch anyone. This was Orochimaru's careless mistake. Despite this, Orochimaru was still quite reistant to Itachi's genjutsu, the reason he had to caught of his hand. Orochimaru, if he's serious can avoid genjutsu and break minor ones and withe the help of either Jman or Tsuande, it wont be much as of factor.

The second, was Itachi having intel in Orochimaru's jutsu and Orochimaru no idea what sword Itachi was using. If he did, obviously he wouldn't have just sat there lol

In fact, Orochimaru has some advantage, such as; his stamina, his ability to shed is skin in countering Itachi's attacks, long range attacks, arguably superior intelligence and numbers.

jiraiya also has the vulnerability to be hit with amaterasu but his chances are much lower.
