South Park has joked about it, but I've heard multiple people say that he's not that great of an actor. But if so, why is he such a star and in so many movies?
Well, for one, he's the definition of typecast. He's basically only suited for action movies. Thinking back, there's Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, movies like Night and Day and all those Mission Impossibles. What was consistent in all those movies? Tom Cruise played essentially the EXACT SAME CHARACTER IN ALL OF THEM. Its comparable to Jennifer Aniston. People have given her a hard time because they say all her characters are Rachel. Well the reason it seems like that is because she was playing herself as Rachel more than a new character.
Well what about Shawn Connery? Is he a bad actor because he played the same character in all the Bond movies? Well of course not because they were all Bond. The difference is when you play the same character in UNRELATED MOVIES. My point is that no matter how many characters Cruise plays, you don't typecast him into a character, you typecast him as..... Tom Cruise. No matter what role or character he plays, its the same character. I never remember the name of his characters, just that he was in the movie.
The whole point here is that no, he's not a good actor. The reason is that he can't honestly play diverse roles, they are all the same. The definition of a good actor is someone who can play many roles and who is truly diverse. Don't get me wrong, Tom Cruise is a great action star and is capable of some emotion, but he's not the best actor out there. Feel free to discuss Tom Cruise, or any other actor for that matter, and thanks for reading as always!
