Is the first Hokage really that strong?

I have been reading and watching the anime all over again this past few weeks and when i saw the anime episode when the three Hokage clashed (you know, the one in the Chunin exam?) and I've seen that the first Hokage didn't seem that strong while fighting Sarutobi. even with the help of Tobirama, they were still having trouble. he couldn't possibly defeat Sarutobi,let alone Madara. And then in the manga, Madara had said that Hashirama is very strong, more than all the five kages combined.
It's making me confused. Maybe Kishimoto-sensei haven't shown us his real power or Madara was just toying with Tsunade about her not being strong enough and that she's ugly.
I can't believe he said that to her. That sick bastard! I'll choke him! CHOKE HIM!:flaw:

i dont think that he was able to fight to his full potential in the fiight aginst sarutobi because he was just a puppet with the edo tensi but in his natural state (alive) imo he would have won against Sarutobi

Did we forget that Orochimaru was controlling Hashirama? Orochimaru didn't know what to do with the two powerful Kage. But Hiruzen is strong and I bet in his prime, he could solo anyone, even Madara.

I believe it was mentioned that since orchimaru never perfected the edo tensei he didn't have full access to the strength and abilities of the ones he summoned. So that was like a small fraction of how powerful the 1st hokage can be.
