Everytime I hear a topic about genjutsu it's always about the ocular ones well what about sound genjutsu?IMO sound genjutsu is so useful and is way better than ocular genjutsu because you don't need eye contact and you can trap multiple targets with it.Not to mention it is nearly impossible to get out of unless you have some way of causing pain to yourself like Shimaru did against Tayuya or if you are a sharingan user.Then you have the fact that sound genjutsu can't be defended against because it uses sound waves to cast the jutsu,even if you plug your ears it still would help because of your body being mostly composed of water which sound waves can affect.Last but not least is the area of effect ,since sound genjutsu uses sound waves it can trap multiple people and travel a long distanse so again sound genjutsu is superior to ocular genjutsu.
You can also trap multiple targets with ocular genjutsu,
when Obito was using the Zetzus to sneak in the alliance's base the first thing that came to Shikaku's mind and Aoi was that Itachi was controlling those people. So according to this, Itachi can control a large amount of people to a
range greater than those of a sensor.
While sound genjutsu is strong, it doesnt mean the illusion itself is stronger. There is a degree to everything.
The frog song was quite powerfull... but the prep time was rediculous and was good for
one use....
What other sound genjutsu do we have? The one used by Tatsuya ? (forgot her name)... it was good, and it did trap both Sasuke and Itachi who werent in line of sight... but we could say that they were at least able to move still. They were able to move to stare at each other thus breaking themselves in the process. The bind on them wasnt complete, although it was impressive ill admit. The effect it had was pretty much the same as Itachi's base Sharingan genjutsu used against Orochimaru ; Oro was hit, but was still able to move, but Itachi stopped him in the process by cutting his hand to prevent seals to go off.
I agree that Sound genjutsu on paper could lseem better as the mechanic involved tells us that everyone who hears it will get caught, and i prefer that over forcing people to look at your eyes. But when you look at the genjutsu feat in the manga;
The Sharingan is what people fear,
The sound genjutsu used by the best sound genjutsu user imo loose to the best Sharingan users.
Itachi's tsukuyomi kills people, it doesnt just paralyze them, and he can use it many times in a single fight if needed.
Like i said, before seeing what both can do, Sound genjutsu seems to have the edge, but the Sharingan is far more instant if we compare the sound genjutsu we have seen, and the strength of the illusion is also superior as it can litterally kill people, control bijuus. The only sound genjutsu that seems to have a lot of power is the frog song, but with this much power comes a lot of prep time and a one time use.
Overall, Sharingan wins.
