Naruto manga chapter 520 - Kabuto states that he had no luck finding Uchiha Shisui's body, and I mean, if you wanted to find anyone in the Naruto universe, Orochimaru's CSI team would be your safest bet, right?

Naruto chapter 550 - mangapanda chapter says that he gave his eye to Itachi, and then died silently, yet in the recent episode, Itachi says that Shisui faked his own death, one could assume that there is a translation error somewhere in there.

I mean, if he's still out there, where could he be and what's he up to?

He presumably died or disposed of his body after giving Itachi his last eye, much like how some ANBU members disintegrate their bodies when they're about to die.
Itachi forged a note saying that he had drowned, but this was not exactly true as a body was not found.

Perhaps he is still alive, but I doubt he would have survived on his own without his eyes anyway.

when I watched the anime, I was thinking the same thing... I said to myself that Shisui must be alive or left the entire ninja world.

But on the other hand, I remember in the old naruto; the Konoha police found Shisui's body but it looked like a suicide and they believed it was Itachi that killed him off because they were best friends... so he killed him to awaken the Mangekyuo Sharingan.

So on that basis I think he's dead if not he would have been Tobi, by the way he would have fitted the role of Tobi because it would look like he is taking out his revenge on Konoha and Danzo taking his eye... His genjutsu is the most powerful in Uchiha clan and Bee and 8 tails called him SHISUI THE TELEPORTER in the anime episode 298.
