He wasn't shown dead and there was no actual grave where they would burry his body.

I believe authorities would have found him if he would have actually drown in water. He was a nobility after all, not a bum without a family or friends.

I think he is alive,after his boat blowed up, we saw only his hat. If he didn't die, probably he had some stable dameg. And I think thats why (if he is still alive) he didin't came to save for Ace.
Another thing, if he is alive, I think Ace would know it.
