Well I would refer to the manga rather than than anime, but that's because I'm a manga person. The issue with the anime at this point is that it started all the way back in the '90 nearly two decades ago. So if you start watching it now, the animation style might appear unappealing due to its age and you need to add to that the regular flaws pretty much any long-running anime has: animation quality is rather iffy due to the large amount of episodes, extended scenes and fillers. Though in the case of OP the latter has never been that of a prominent thing in comparison to Naruto or Bleach. Still I prefer manga as they are more genuine.

In the case of OP you also have the additional problem that it takes a while to get used to the artwork and story. This is where much of the animosity towards the series stems from as people who never got passed the very first arcs, use these as their reference point.

Nonetheless OP is still very well one of the best series out there, possibly even the best and that's something that can be said with a large degree of objectivity.

Decent female characters? Check

Emotional scenes? Check

Great villains? Check

Epic battles? Quadruple check

Personally I still find this AMV one of the best as an introduction in regards to OP:

It contains footage of around the first 600 chapters, but doesn't spoil too much of the series.

I usually dont distinguish between good/bad art/animation. So I have no problem with anime. And take it slow. The world building is slow and big and much better than Naruto ever was. Naruto was about Asura/Uchiha and nothing else really mattered. But in OP, its more than that. Though story is focused on Luffy and SH crew, we learn slowly that though Luffy is the best rising star, he is an underdog. He is strong coz of his allies and his SH. Anyway its better story. (Again, I dont care about art and animation and soundtrack. Hell, I had watched 50+ anime and I didn't know that there were background sound. I would listen to those background sound but never knew its existence.)

It's the best out of the big three, it gives character development to side characters, something that Naruto failed miserably in, detailed backgrounds and nice foreshadowing (basically minimal ass pulls) and is just overall great. Read the manga, Toei tends to ruin the anime more often than not.

Well it has it's low points but overall it's a good show. Like for example when i started watching anime, it appeared boring to me but since i had nothing better to do, i kept watching and then it became a lot better, with marine ford arc being a master piece. Manga on the other hand also has it's low points, like it's art style is kinda messy. But story is good.

This, basically though I would only like to add that if you do go for the anime I would still recommend you switch to manga after the enies lobby arc, or at least after the time skip

Also, if you do start with the anime, if you dislike the early episodes (say 10 or 15 epsiodes) start watching at the start of Loguetown arc (idk episode but basically chapter 100 which is also aptly named the journey begins, the chapters prior to that are solely for the early core crew development, ofc go back and read those later if u skip them, they are very important)

That said, I also wholeheartedly agree that the manga is far superior to the anime and think is the best way to go about One Piece and if you do read it, read the Digitally Colored Version (available online in high quality, in english and officially colored and released by shueisha/shonen jump)

Because of the anime, a lot of people think that even WB on his last legs(that was finished off from bullets) is more powerful than a fresh admiral. Its perfectly to think that the yonko are more powerful but can beat admirals med diff tops? The anime had Akainu sh!tting himself when WB appeared behind him, desperately running for his life, maniacally shooting magma fists indiscriminately & gagging on his own blood after a 2nd gura punch. In the manga, Akainu didn't notice WB appear behind him, tanked the 1st gura punch & immediately ripped off half of WB's face & fell into a crater after receiving the 2nd gura punch.
Ahh I see. Thanks for clearing that up.
