Well I would refer to the manga rather than than anime, but that's because I'm a manga person. The issue with the anime at this point is that it started all the way back in the '90 nearly two decades ago. So if you start watching it now, the animation style might appear unappealing due to its age and you need to add to that the regular flaws pretty much any long-running anime has: animation quality is rather iffy due to the large amount of episodes, extended scenes and fillers. Though in the case of OP the latter has never been that of a prominent thing in comparison to Naruto or Bleach. Still I prefer manga as they are more genuine.
In the case of OP you also have the additional problem that it takes a while to get used to the artwork and story. This is where much of the animosity towards the series stems from as people who never got passed the very first arcs, use these as their reference point.
Nonetheless OP is still very well one of the best series out there, possibly even the best and that's something that can be said with a large degree of objectivity.
Decent female characters? Check
Emotional scenes? Check
Great villains? Check
Epic battles? Quadruple check
Personally I still find this AMV one of the best as an introduction in regards to OP:
It contains footage of around the first 600 chapters, but doesn't spoil too much of the series.
