Is no one really curious about the fake third eye?

I haven't seen a thread about this yet, but I am quite curious about Hagoromo's fake third eye. Obviously its not an actual eye, but I don't think its a tattoo either. Rather, I think its a natural body marking that he had since birth. If you look really close at the left infant, it seems to be on him since birth.

We have seen the third eye symbolism before in this manga, look closely at the background Uchiha in the first panel.

We've also seen it in other stories, so its not a real foreign idea.

We also have Obito's mask which also falls in line with the fake third eye (credit to Getsuuga for this contribution):

My question is what purpose it serves in the Narutoverse and what significance it has in regard to the sage. Hagoromo also has the same image on the back of his cloak, so it has meaning. Apart from it simply resembling the Rinnegan, what purpose does the symbolic third eye have? Anyone have insight into this or general ideas?

For me it doesn't look like an eye but more of a symbol.. doubt he can '' see '' through it.

Wasn't it closed as well as all of hagoromo's other eyes, then opened up with the rest? I got the impression it's a legit eye. Its really no that farfetched considering the transformation people go through from the juubi chakra.

I'm not sure what it could mean, but really it was foreshadowed. How Obito knew is a whole other thread in itself...

Well meanings associated with the third eye include clear sight, foresight, prediction, wisdom, etc...

It likely has a symbolic connection to the attributes, but I can't imagine how he got it in the first place, because that would be one hell of a mutation if he was born with it.

Like I said in the OP, I don't think its a real eye and believe its a body marking he was born with.

No, it was never closed. You may have thought that because the image is from far away and it looks confined, but no it was never closed. I think its more of a attribute of his body (a result of the Juubi's chakra like the Rinnegan itself) but not an actual eye. I like the point about Obito's mask, that can be added to the list too. However, Obito's mask was more a symbol of the sharingan tomoe more than anything. But again, I like the point and think it can be added to the list.

Again, I think it was a mutation brought on by the Juubi chakra (like the Rinnegan). Thanks for the ideas about foresight and whatnot, that makes logical sense, considering he ended up being a very wise and powerful being.

interestingly , kaguya seems to have a slit on her forehead , which , along with the juubi chakra , might have played a role in the final outcome of the mutation . hagaromo and his bro likely were inspired by the markings on their forehead and decided to create a symbol for it. yet I don't have much insight as to the symbolism of this '3rd eye'

Third eye represents enlightenment in every aspect. In HINDUISM it's associated with the Center deity ,"LORD SHANKAR- THE DESTROYER",other being "LORD VISHNU- THE 'PALANHAR',meaning that who governs" & "BRAHMA-THE CREATER of UNIVERSE,EARTH,HEAVEN,HUMANS,ANGELS,DEMONS,etc." These three together are revered as "TRI-DEV",meaning 3 SUPREME GODS. Only one perfect being "SHIVA-SHAKTI",which has no form, shape, etc. but a pure energy is above them which in a way because "it" created them. Though shiva is said to be present as shankar in a physical form and shakti as parvati,as his wife, both eternal. This is how I interpreted my family religion's mythology.

Well in short it symbolises enlightenment and utter chaos,an eye which Lord shiva opened when his anger rose to the zenith of epitome and the entire universe,"3 LOK",meaning 3 worlds or dimension namely EARTH,HELL and HeaveN shook in terror..

It's a sign of enlightenment. It could be a seal that formed as a result of sealing the juubi in himself. I don't think it will be of any particular importance in the manga.

there... on the back... that's the same symbol :)
it's not an eye, but a symbol

check the back of his cloak
I actually mentioned it being the same as the symbol on his back in the OP, but didn't bother posting a pic.

Wow, great information. So it represents enlightenment (good) and chaos (evil). That's a pretty amazing duel meaning, thanks for the insight.
