Is it wrong for a group of people to ask for reparations? Let's give some examples.

Native Americans. Is it wrong for them to ask for reparations? They were forced out of their land and murdered near extinction by the earlier European settlers and later US Government. This lasted several hundred years. Is it okay that they ask to be reimbursed for the hardships of their ancestors?

African Americans. Is it wrong for them to ask for reparations? They were sold and bought from countries in Africa and sent to the Americas and West Indies for slave labor. This form of slavery lasted about 245 years(Estimated 1620-1865). Is it okay that they ask to be reimbursed for the hardships of their ancestors?

Japanese Americans. Is it wrong for them to ask for reparations? Now obviously this wasn't as horrific as the former two, however in its own right it was a horrible thing that happened. For about 2.5 years during WW2, Japanese people were sent internment camps due to what happened at Pearl Harbor. The US government assumed that all Japanese Americans or simply Japanese people were spies to their motherland Japan. Do they deserve any form of reimbursement for this treatment?

What are your thoughts on this. Defend your points.

Don't be the, "Just assimilate..." guy either.

Well two things, Native Americans & Japanese Americans did get and are getting reparations.

The government of the United States under the Reagan Administration officially apologized for the Japanese American internment during World War II in 1988 and paid reparations to former internees and their descendants.

Thousands of American Indians are now in line to receive part of a $3.4 billion settlement with the federal government, ending a long-running dispute over government mismanagement of tribal lands and accounts. After an initial agreement was outlined in 2009, Congress approved it in November 2010 and it spent the last two years (2011 - 2012).

Another $1.9 billion will go into a "land consolidation program" that will allow people to sell fractions of land they own, which are slivers of once larger ancestral plots that have been divided and subdivided over generations. The group ownership of land by American Indians dates back more than 100 years, before American Indians were permitted to write wills. As a result, the government says many pieces of tribal lands are held by many owners -- possibly hundreds, if not thousands of people per parcel. Officials have said the project allows individual landowners to receive greater value for their share, while cutting administrative costs for the federal government, which manages the Indian land trust.

I'm asking if people think it's right that they should get those payments.

Reparations are not wrong if you were directly involved in a government mandated decision that cost you monetary loss. Japanese Americans that were placed in internment camps, still living, were rewarded reparations for their treatment which resulted in loss of business, homes, and employment. Here is a great video on the topic:

Well yes I do think that we (me being black) do deserve something equivalent to reparations.

Now should they just hand out money to everyone who meets these particular ethnic standards? No.

Why should they be reimbursed for the hardships of their ancestors? They didn't go through it themselves.

That would like me asking for reparations because the Nazi's killed several of my relatives.

You'll have to ask Germany for that.

Well why not? Native Americans received/still receive reimbursements. Do you oppose that?

Actually, yes I do. Many civilizations and races have lost their land and had millions of their kind slaughtered only to receive nothing in return.

Or better yet, it would be like me asking for reparations for the hardships endured by my serf ancestors.

Honestly, America owes it to the Native Americans, considering its there land there sat on, there land they work on, America was stolen from them and so I think they are owed more than can ever be repaid.

African Americans. This one is more difficult. Though racism is a real problem black people are much more integrated into society that Native Americans are and also slavery, though prolific in America was by no means confined to America. Its harder for Black people in America I understand that and sympathise deeply but I can't help feeling that it plays a small part in the ongoing racism, if you can't move on you can't move forward.

Again, with the Japanese, payment to the people who physically suffered, yes. My Nan got a payment because my Grandfather was a Japanese Prisoner of war, it came decades after his death but...the one thing I would like to see America do is apologise for Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they used them as a test site and made themselves one of the worst human right violators of WW2 in two bombs and yet they persist in sticking up for what they did. The war would have ended in a few months, it was totally unnecessary, if you heard those peoples stories...if you heard them...I have, its beyond nightmarish...

Okay well these aren't those other civilizations or races. I'm talking about these specific cases in the US.

Still a bad analogy. You're talking about the reparations of one and I'm talking about the reparations of the many.

look at that bullshit
took their land, colonized, and only gave them a small ass space out of the entire US to live

it's kinda sad what happened to the Native Americans

The point still stands.

OK, reparation for all descendants of serfs. Because we should all get reparations if your ancestors endured some sort of hardship in connection to a form of slavery.
