Araya didn't even get the hype that Yodo did in the novel adaption of the movie. Yet he wasted Inojin in like two moves. Not only was Inojin the only Konoha ninja to lose but he went out so easily. I guess he is the Ino of his team. Shikadai seems more a mix of Shikamaru and Neji. Neji in that Shikadai seems way stronger than Shikamaru ever was and is Boruto's friend and rival who he has to beat in the chuunin exam like Naruto did with Neji. ChoCho also seems pretty strong and got hype in the Naruto Gaiden. Inojin just seems to be there to make smartass remarks and get his ass beat like Kiba.

It's the same as the previous Ino-Shika-Cho trio
Shikamaru was the strongest and the other two were mediocre, same thing in the new gen Shikadai is the smartest and strongest, Chocho and Inojin are weak.
OT: Inojin does seem to be like the new Kiba, all bark but no bite. He called Boruto out in one episode when he was the one that was inferior. He needs to be more confident in his abilities and stop being one-dimensional.
When you watch that fight, he wasn't making any adjustments, just relying on his ink drawings. He couldn't move out of the way when he realized that his plan failed. He needs to have better strategies.
I also loved Mitsuki's "You were close". I don't know if he was trying to fit in and be nice or trolling Inojin and giving him a taste of his own wiseass medicine. I feel we were suppose to think it was some type of comeuppance for Inojin since that is something he would say to someone who lost in about 10 seconds.
I definitely get Kiba vibes with him. A guy who thinks he is great but is actually one of, if not the, weakest genin. Always ragging on ChoCho, calling Sarada's opponent weak instead of congratulating her, etc. The anime set him up to get cooked and realize how weak he truly is.

I remember when the trailer for the boruto movie came out and it showed a part where inojin was taking down a ninja all serious and shit. Made it seem like he was very skilled in close combat / hand to hand combat.
Why have a blade if you dont use it? I think since its a competition he chose a more low tier mindset to fight?
I mean his dad was in the anbu black ops, i'm pretty sure his dad trained him in the ways of a "real" ninja. Anbu are no joke, and his mom wasnt very skilled in combat but her clan has some interesting moves.

inojin fighting style isn't suit for arena battle . fine art jutsu work great at range and behind his comrade . in arena 1vs1 he stand no chance again swordmaster shinobi like Araya
remember swordmaster shinobi alway focus at reaction time , footwork , speed . their main goal is killing enemy before they even finish the hand seal .

The chunnin exam is rushed. It not like those golden Naruto times. Sumire already disqualified even she easily jounin level. It does not matter since all still filler.

Inojin's underdevloped due to bad writing. He has insane potential mind transfer/sharing into ink creatures and directing them to do your bidding using them to attack your opponwnts while you engage them. You could do anything from blind to bind (if add fuinn jutsu into them) while your fighting with kenjutsu or using other skills. We mustn't forget this is Boruto's story Dattebasa his own team mates stand around doing nothing but cheerleading. You shouldn't except much more from Ino, Shika and Cho.
