If he "didn't have Kurama" then things would be completely different. In manga rules though if he didn't have Kurama he would have some other kind of powerup. It's like the rules of manga to have stuff like this.

Most main characters have something tragic happen to them and gain a power up like goku,yusuke,Ichigo,gon etc
I think Kishi made it to where the kyuubi is narutos powerup he gets when something emotional happens but he wanted narutos power up to have a personality and a price instead of the same you killed my friend,I'm angry,bam transformation

dbz insurance was the fact that dying had no consequences because the afterlife was awesome and if you knew the right people you could visit earth whenever you damn well please or you could be revived
