The only time he really needed it was when he was faced up against the 5 Tailed Beasts and up against a JUUBI ENHANCED Madara.

The 7th Gate itself is enough to put Gai into the top 10 if not top 5. His speed and strength was enough to push Madara back even in his Juubi form. Besides, without Juubi to enhance Madara along with Sage mode, which both were stolen/borrowed, he would've gotten killed straight with Hirudora.

Gai tanks most of the NV and I'm not even trolling. No one in NV was worthy enough for the 8th Gate to be activated upon. Don't underestimate Gai just because he wasn't able to kill a JUUBI Jinchuuriki. Madara himself is fodder.

And also Taijutsu would wreck Ninjutsu hands down. Lee and Gai are fast enough to evade Ninjutsu and their strength if enough to shatter 1000 suns. Bushy Brow Duo wrecks your faves
