I think Asuma is a perfect representation of a Jounin class ninja. He has 2 elements (atleast) he had a decent/large amount of chakra, he was good in tai and nin jutsu (and off a guess I'm sure he was pretty decent at gen jutsu) and he has all the traits of a Jounin/A-rank ninja and nothing TOO over the top, like a technique that he could stop anyone with.

He was S rank, its sad we didnt get to see more of him, don't down play him because he didnt know about hidan's ability, he only got hit once, hes a close to mid range fighter. With great combination techs. He had great wind style techs, and one of the only few people who could teach it so passionately. He was a innovator, and i believe asuma, will come back. According to the Databook, it says we wont see asuma's true potential till well into the series, and we aren't well in it's just beginning. S rank hes called a jonin Master.

I think he had a high bounty on his head. That means he was considered as a dangerous ninja. So he is definitively S-Rank
