Because when times go wrong, when things go beyond our perception of control, we need to believe that there is someone so powerful, they can fix it for us. We NEED to believe that our worst isn't the best possible.

Some people are born into it like Christianity or Muslims. Some might be born into that dark sh*t like witchcraft or voodoo. Maybe some people should really look into what there praising cause I'm sure a lot of people don't.

Not knowing what created the universe(s) and also closure so we're less freaked out by death. I say believe whatever, if we go somewhere after this, then it's to the same place.

The need for answers. The human mind cannot comprehend an unanswerable question so we answer it with religious belief. People will always want to know where we came from and where we are going. Fact is that nobody knows or will ever know. We fear the finality of death as the end of our existence so we believe in an after life. Our curiosity drives us to find out how we came to be and that leads to tales of creationism. All religious organizations are merely made of people trying to give their answers to unanswerable questions to humanity.

Although there things I disagree with, I do believe the overall message is important and that is to just be a good person. Maybe that's not how all religions work, I dunno.

Spirituality and religion are two different things.

Spirituality is how man identifies with the world around him and the mystery of conscious experience. No one can avoid forming a spiritual viewpoint, even if it is to side with the materialist idea that nothing outside of the material exists (which is an interesting thought exercise in and of itself... because is the conscious experience a part of the material world? It's a "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" problem that is impossible to dismiss but also impossible to resolve).

Religion is what happens when groups of people with similar spiritual groundings congregate and socialize. They form structures for taking care of each other, for delegating responsibilities, etc. Religion is the government people of common spiritual beliefs use to minister to each other and to the community around them (as most spiritual beliefs, even materialist varieties, espouse the importance of charity and humility).

Religions that have a long history also begin to develop texts that attempt to document encounters with spiritual entities or struggles, as well as historic events. They are subject to the same influences that any human institution is, and must be taken with that in mind.
