In your opinion, what is the main cause that drives us to need religion?

God is just in the minds of people. They want to believe there's a higher power to guide them.

Just like heaven/hell. People are afraid of death so they believe there's something after that.

I for one don't believe any of that stuff.

Fear, of there being nothing after death, and comfort of the idea that your loved ones that have died are now in a better place.

Well religion taught us how to be human.
How to be selfless and gave us morals

However, along the way, somebody decided that one can take advantage of good people. Thus begin the era of the war.

If you take a look at the Sacred Books = old and new testament and qoran, each states never to use god's name in vain and yet thats what most religious war is all about: which name to be used for god.

Well, it seems to be too much of a coincidence for religion to pop up everywhere.

Perhaps its just a way to control the masses

I remember a study was conducted where they discovered infants, would naturally grow to question their existence, [ a trait of a thinking mind], and they would believe things, i.e. trees, clouds etc, was in fact ''created'' instinctively.

Religions are alright, unless people commit unholy acts in the name of their religion.(cough-islam........)
