"Only Senjutsu and Taijutsu can physically harm him" - Minato. Gai never used the Eight Gates performing Hirudora. Madara was surprised at Gai's skill in Taijutsu and ability to open seventh of the Eight Gates yet brushed it off because the level he has obtain is beyond fodder like Guy. Although, Madara has ego from his new found powers, he did not want to underestimate Gai if he open the Eighth of the Eight Gates which could push Madara into a corner. (simple version)

One question. How would you feel if a man in skin tight jump suit burst on the scene with speed feats at such a level? That type of power caught his attention. All his time living, Madara may have seen the move used by someone but maybe not in the degree that Gai used it in. He didn't expect someone he never heard of to do such a thing to him. Surprised is the perfect reaction.
