Madara was surprised at Gai's skill in Taijutsu and ability to open seventh of the Eight Gates yet brushed it off because the level he has obtain is beyond fodder like Guy. Although, Madara has ego from his new found powers, he did not want to underestimate Gai if he open the Eighth of the Eight Gates which could push Madara into a corner. (simple version)
