In a story, would you consider killing off the main character/s a bad idea?

Depends on the situation actually!
For example in death note ,light's death was meaningful at the end...though he played an evil part in the series

For example, with Harry Potter it would've been a bad idea. With Naruto, maybe a good idea, maybe a bad. Dragon Ball Z, good.



I've always wanted to watch it but don't have the time, but I'm just saying. Lol

It all depends, as people have already stated.

In this show where Naruto has never once shut up about becoming a Hokage, and how we keep getting speeches about his inevitable greatness rubbed in our faces, it's hard to believe he won't survive. The entire story would be more or less wasted.

I think killing a character, especially THE main character, is harder to pull off right than most here realize. You have to make sure it counts, that it feels relevant to the story, that the sacrifice is worth it and that everybody actually cares about the character. Just adding it for the sake of trying to pull a plot twist or making your work seem deeper than it actually is is idiotic.

Not only do I like it I thin it is necessary for most plots. It shows the main character isn't invincible it puts everyone in danger by showing the reader that it's not all going to be alright for everyone. It also gives so much to the story. Look at when Hughes died in FMA or Wolfwood in Trigun, all the members of the Stark family in Game of Thrones. it gives so much to the story that i cant help but love it.

Yes, I'd say that is a good ending. Not only does it give the character exceptional meaning, but it confirms that the audience have formed an emotional bond with said character. If your favourite character dies during a series, it is bound to provoke some sort of emotional reaction. I love twists like that, such as the infamous 'Madoka Episode 3 twist'. If its the main character, its very very hard to pull off. There needs to be a build up and an epilogue to the main characters death to cause a deep emotional response, and also to give that characters death a proper meaning.

Naruto won't die though, and if he does then Kishi is either a terrible writer or a genius... leaning more towards terrible writer.
