This idea probably isn't original. I bet there's loads of stories on fanfiction.net that are using this element, even the ones not about naruto, but for any story.
Here goes.
“Naruto. Sakura. There’s something I need to show you.”
Sakura Haruno turned around at the light tap on her shoulder and the note of urgency that was evident in the quiet voice, only to find a pale, black haired teen staring back at her.
“Sai?” She asked, startled. She glanced mildly at her blonde companion who stood beside her - and who also looked confused - before asking, “What is it?”
The tall teenager cast many wary glances around them, as though there were others who might have been eavesdropping on them. Confused, Sakura also looked around. The main street in which they stood - or at least what was left of it after Pein’s attack - was crowded with busy construction workers, worried families, and little children running around absorbed in their games. Other than that, the street was filled with rubble, garbage, and a lot of dirt. And she hardly expected those to grow ears and listen.
What’s he so nervous about?
Sai took a deep breath before replying.
“There’s something I need you to guard over,” He said very quickly, lowering his voice with each word. “While I inform the Hokage about it.”
“Ehh, Tsunade-bachaan?” Naruto mused, squinting, resting a hand on his chin, and looking very much like the dimwit he usually is.
Sakura instead crossed her arms.
“Tsunade-sama has only just woke up. Whatever it is, I think you should give her time to recover.” She scolded defensively, thinking only of her shishou. “But…what is it?”
Sai shook his head.
“I can’t tell you here. And this is urgent. The Hokage must be very busy right now, so it will take some time before I can go to her and explain everything. I would have gone to Kakashi-sensei, but he too has been busy since we’ve arrived back. Please, both of you must come.”
Sakura bit her lip nervously.
It really must be urgent, if it’s making Sai nervous. But…She glanced at Naruto. Before Sai’s sudden appearance, the both of them had been on their way to help with the reconstruction. They had promised, after all.
And he must be tired, after our last confrontation with Sasuke. She thought worriedly.
“Yosh!” Naruto grinned. “Sounds like fun! Let’s go then!” He then rested his hands behind his head.
Never mind, I forgot, Sakura inwardly seethed, and balled her hands into fists. He is the number one, hyperactive knucklehead ninja after all.
“Right,” Sai nodded, and gestured toward the Hokage's residence. “We’ll be going to an underground hideout of Root. Follow me.” With that he began to stride quickly down the rode, his eyes darting madly in every direction.
“Root?” Naruto’s eyes widened, as he walked to keep up with him.
“Does this have to do with Danzo?” Sakura asked, pacing on the other side of Sai.
“Yes,” Sai nodded. He was barely audible. “But no more questions. They might hear, and quicken their pace. I fear they might have been assigned to go and prevent his death.”
“Death?! Naruto said loudly. “But Danzo’s already –“
“Shut up Naruto!” Sakura scolded, casting her eyes wildly about.
Sai gave a small sigh.
“Come. Everything will make sense once I show you.”
The hideout was huge, dark, and eerily silent. Endless tunnels twisted and entertwined, as though to ensnare the overconfident intruder. But Sai trudged through the maze almost as effortlessly as it was to breath. Sakura shivered, but not from the cold. Her pale skin broke out with goosebumps and she could feel her palms were hot with sweat from the tension that was thick in the air. She wasn’t sure if she was paranoid, but she could feel shadows lurking about. It was quite frightening.
She glanced at her friend. Naruto’s face was more serious than earlier, but he looked about the place with a curious, childish wonder.
“Here.”
Sai led them to a door within the hall they stood, and gestured for them to enter the room within. Sakura tentatively stepped inside after Naruto.
The sight made her gasp.
The room was huge. Almost the size of a full training ground. There were dim lamps that hung on the walls all around the room, but lit the area only enough so that they could just make out the device at the room’s center and the main source of her surprise.
There stood a large, shiny, black pillar. Thick wires seem to be attached to it, and snaked everywhere on the ground, connecting it to unknown places. A huge computer was stationed beside the strange pillar, and was also seemingly attached to it. Its blue monitor was flashing continuous numerical sequences. There was a table that stood directly infront of the pillar (at least, she thought it was the pillar's ‘front’, as it came first in her sight) in which a strange headset sat upon. The headset too, was attached to the pillar by wiring.
She stole a glance in Naruto’s direction. His eyes were wide open as he was gaping at the weird object.
“What…what is that?!” He asked loudly, without taking his eyes off the pillar.
Sai's monotone voice coolly replied.
“It is a time machine.”
I'm remembering Steins;Gate, lol. What do you think? Good/bad?
Also, where I mentioned 'like the dimwit he usually is' ...would it be is, or was >.< ?
