Apart from continuously attempting to attack Konoha, he didn't really do anything else that was really that destructive. I also don't see how he would have been feared by other villages when it was shown he didn't really do any damage to any of them. The only villages that Madara has been shown to have shaky ties with was the Stone village when he took on Muu and Onoki. Was the battle at VOTE really that infamous that the whole Shinobi world feared it?

Even before forming alliance and konoha, Madara and Hashirama had really bad reputation to be ridiculously strong ninjas. Only they could go toe to toe with each others. And that's without even revealing their true powers.

Because Madara wouldn't have just destroyed a village for no reason. I can understand the Leaf, but Why the Mist, Stone, Cloud and Sand?
Also Yamato stated 'when it comes to Madara, I'll believe anything', but could he really have expected that Madara would survive?

The Uchiha clan was, along with the Senju Clan, considered to be the most powerful clan in the Narutoverse at the time, and Madara was the most powerful Shinobi among them. That alone should be enough to strike fear into people, along with the fact that he effortlessly defeated a Kage and his Apprentice, and almost managed to bring down a man whose power some people considered a fairy tail.
So yes, the name of Uchiha Madara is going to strike fear into peoples heart, especially when he managed to convince them that Madara was in possession of immortality, or something along those lines.

They were afraid because think of it like this.... would you want a person running around basically able to do what he wants when he wants and if you try to stop him your dead... And he was feared before the villages were even made... ._.
He was the most powerful shinobi who came from one of the most powerful clans. He was the only man who rivaled the most powerful shinobi (Hashirama) and he took out Muu and Ohnoki easily. Madara is more famous for his actions prior to the existence of Konoha.

^This^ Plus his battle with Hashirama created an entire valley more than enough to give arise to fear and last but not the least Muu and Onooki part no doubt Muu was one of the strongest Kages at that time and two out Muu and Onooki together is not a small achievement..:yeah:

madara lived in a life time of war (where legends are born), and before it was shown, we never knew that he faced onooki.
now the writer is not gonna mention every encounter madara had but, looking at his power and the type of guy he was, it's safe to say that he terrorized nations (along side his clan). he was like the Hitler of NV .....................
