I'm confused about awakening the rinnegan

He only has Ashura's chakra in him. If he somehow got Indra's chakra from Sasuke, I guess he could obtain the rinnegan

I don't think so...imo u need sharingan + ashura chakra. It only sounds logical...rinnegan is like an upgrade to EMS.

There is no plot hole, just the meaning here that Hagoromo split his chakra according to each domain/dominant side like Naruto is Ashura that mean he getting just Ashura part and Yang of Hagoromo power up while Sasuke getting Indra part or Yin of Hagoromo power up

Its Current Ashura chakra (naruto dna) + Indra Chakra (Sasuke dna) = Hagoromo Chakra (Rinnegan)

You need it to awaken it.
It doesn't mean you will.

Madara specifically pointed this out to obito when he implanted Hshirama cells into him to save his life.
Given the fact that he didn't awaken it obito was unable to use two rinnegan later in life during the war.

There is no plot hole you just need to pay attention

Madara thought that Obito should had gained the Rinnegan, but said it wasn't detrimental to his plans that he didn't because Obito could still control the Gedo Mazo statue by just having Uchiha+Senju chakras.

It wasn't even known to Madara that you specifically need Indra+Ashura chakras to awaken the Rinnegan, because Madara was completely unaware about his and Hashirama's true identities. He, like us, initially thought that you just needed Uchiha+Senju chakras/D.N.A.
