Sasuke was not in Kishi's original plan for Naruto. He was added later as a rival, from prompting of those close to Kishi saying that Naruto needed a competitor to grow stronger with.

It would've been like Kishi had made it before. Or in other words, better.

I've... Asked myself some things like this before. I'm a Sasuke fan, but not a massive fangirl. That doesn't change the fact that I've been reading, say, the Itachi Pursuit Arc and the Kage Summit Arc and stuff and just thought, "Man, Sasuke wasn't even supposed to be in the series! What would Kishi have thought of without a rival character for Naruto?"

Really, though. I know he would have thought of something, but I really think if there hadn't been a character for Naruto to build such a bond with the manga wouldn't be the most popular in the world. It probably wouldn't have made it this far, either. Unless Kishi had made Naruto best friends with some other character. Which makes me question what he originally had in mind.

Sasuke isn't the most amazing character, but he has helped push the plot along.
