frankly, the smart thing to do would have been to teach nagato reaper death seal, have him practice on rin and "Forget" to tell him that it kills you. then get rid of yahiko and konan, then revive madara with edo tensei just to laugh at him. Boom. no akatsuki, so the biggest baddies there would be are kakuzu and orochimaru.

The reason Nagato died was because he had expended most of his chakra and wanted to die so he used the last of his life force to revive everyone. If he was at his normal chakra level he would have survived. It's not a death sentence jutsu like getting a jinchuriki ripped from you
