If you read the manga he didn't slip through the rocks, Obito lost half of his chest, part of his face, and his right leg and Madara had to replace them with Hashirama clone material.

Jiraiya had told Nagato about the curse of hatred in the ninja world, and how he wished he could break it.

Nagato thought about this and said those words to Jiraiya, which his how Jiraiya got inspiration for his book!
