As tittle says, I want to broaden my vocabulary in English. Recently did the test in the thread "show your english knowledge" (or somthing like that xd) and it estimated that my vocabulary has 7000-7500 words roughly :|
So, I know reading is probably the best way...but I'd like some suggestions regarding short-stories or small books to read...as well as other methods to achieve my goal.
I will rep + whoever gives me a proper comment.

I would read several classical novels, such as 1984, Catch-22, Crime and Punishment, Lord of the Rings, etc.
They use much richer diction than most anything else you could find out there today. That's honestly how I gained a more sophisticated vocabulary to write with. The reads almost require you to broaden your vocabulary.

Problem is...I've already read 1984 and Crime and Punishment in Spanish...and for the moment I don't desire to re-read them.
Also, I think it'd be better if I started with something easier and shorter since I hadn't read a novel in English since many months ago (and it was the Penguin editorial ver.)...As a matter of fact, the only thing I've read in English recently is NB's post o_o

Hmmm...how about Of Mice and Men? Or Animal Farm? Those are both short. The point is, don't just pick up any book. Pick up one that has a decent amount of legacy. Just find something like that and you'll be fine.

Or you could just pick up a dictionary and practice writing sentences composed of words you know very little about.

I got on this test above 20,000, even though I use English only in school and on this forum, and I don't talk to people only to the professors :p You see, my principle is that you should read books from which you learn something, something important, and not stupid stories. The reason I got this score is probably because I often listen to audios that define difficult vocabulary for you. You can download them. So, it's just the matter of memorizing them. Don't waste time on reading stories, seriously.

Read The Hunger Games series, the books are quick, the story is interesting/exciting, & you'll learn some new words.

Language without a point is meaningless. Those 'stories' are ten times more important than the words they are built of.

But you can't understand the story if you don't know your vocabulary. Stories usually try to influence reader's mind, thoughts. Some people don't like that, and they are right to object it.

That test only went up to 45,000 words, you couldn't have gotten more than that, which is a major problem with it to begin with. xd Using your vocabulary and having it are two different things. If you write just to show off how many difficult words you can fit in, then people will be turned off because not only do they not know them, but even if they did they'll just think you're being arrogant.

You must have both. You need to learn how to use the words you have as well as have many to use. Spelling and grammar in general are key, you might have a lot of words to use, but if you don't spell them properly or have a firm understanding of punctuation, sentence structure (which sentence structure is an artform, not something that's easy to learn), etc, then your large vocabulary is useless.

I practice my grammar at every opportunity and I'm thousands of times more dedicated to writing than any of the best selling authors throughout time itself...I will literally kill and slaughter if it brings me one step closer to achieving my goal. If I'm unsure of how to spell a word, even if I've done it hundreds of times before, then I'll simply copy and paste said word into google to make sure. You can check all my posts here on NB and you won't find very many mistakes. I also take the time to read my posts and fix any mistakes if need be.

I use an online thesaurus to find synonyms for words if I can't think of one that's better; repetition in writing is horrible, don't do it unless there's no other choice. While I'm there I also take the time to read the whole page in the hopes of increasing my vocabulary, but that's the extent of my efforts to do that though it does wonders. I couldn't care less if I don't have a large amount of words to use (though I do), if I went up against someone that just took pride in their vocabulary, more people would read and like my stuff because it's good and understandable, not a pile of rubbish that doesn't make any sense.

Mice and men uh? I liked the movie, and I've heard the book is better, so I'll start with that one.
...Animal Farm doesn't sound familiar o_o Gonna check it after Mice and Men.
xd Ah! The dictionary...my all-life pal. With it I was able to get a decent vocabulary in my mother language...so I know it works xd Too bad I only have a crappy dictionary Spanish-English/English-Spanish... Gonna start with that one...have no choice xd
If you want to really expand your English vocabulary, read Shakespeare. Also, Charles Dickens is good.
I love Dickens :) Specially Oliver Twist :`)
Btw, I can't give you rep, xd Already gave ya for the comment about the expansion jutsu :lmao:

...:1 How can you say so? Reading Literature is for the message...the story.
Read The Hunger Games series, the books are quick, the story is interesting/exciting, & you'll learn some new words.
...Well...after Mice and Men and Animal Farm.
BTw...no rep for ya either. Already gave ya for the funny comment on the thread "What you want for Christmas.
It's simple, read the dictionary. Read 10 pages a day and you'll be surprised my how much info you learn and just practice them daily.
Hahaha The dictionary has always been my all-life pal xd

...Wow...that's really a large post. Hahaha And very well-written too.
Hahaha Anyway...I think my grammar is decent. I've worked a lot to be able to express my self in English in a understandable way. I've always tried to write as much as I can in English, however I did know my vocabulary is poor...it's just that I didn't know that poor :1
Thanks for the comment xd

Really? Stupid stories? I am betting that any body of us from NB will become more popular than you irl just because one of the stupid stories inspired them to write a stupid story them self.
I mean no offense, some stories may indeed be stupid, and your experience with them must not have been the best, but please, don't just term a story "stupid".

OP: You can't really use a shortcut, they almost never work. I recommend you pick a heavy book which doesn't bore you at all, like somebody already recommended, Catch-22/Lord of The Rings, depending on whether you prefer a brilliant fantasy(LOTR) or a brilliant comedy(Catch-22).

Yeah, but don't judge yourself based on that test, it's absolute rubbish if it only goes up to 45,000 words to begin with. You're pretty good for it not being your native language, then again, most natives to English these days couldn't use it properly if their lives depended on it (glares at teenagers). At least there are some people that want an education. xd

Hah xd…you participated in my thread & your result is …not that bad, you say! You could share it with me! :D There was nothing to be afraid of! :) I didn't say I want to see the top results!
If you can write like that you can get better any time so don't worry cause learning English is my expertise! :y
If you want to do something for your vocab & get the fastest outcome, first you must find or define your interests & the means of it! :) (Worked for me!) Meaning: You can improve your vocab by any means! :y Even reading some posts here can be useful! xd
Watch your favorite movies or episodes without subtitles & guess the dictation of words unknown for you; Then find their meanings in your dictionary! You’ll learn some practical words & have also enjoyed your time! :D It’s like killing 2 birds with one stone! (Entertainment & education!)
Hope that will work! :)

I didn't realize you'd be into classics, Of Mice and Men & Animal Farm are both great novels, here's a few more quick read classics that I'd rank a little higher:
-Lord of the Files, by William Golding
-The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
-The Chronicles of Narnia (series) by C. S. Lewis

I got 20,000+ words. I actually don't read a lot xd but I would suggest listening to the news, reading the paper, magazines etc. These are the things that I usually read, Stuff like that. Also, maybe try watching more english. Movies and dramas, stuff that you like. I think those are the best ways to learn more words :)
