Really? Stupid stories? I am betting that any body of us from NB will become more popular than you irl just because one of the stupid stories inspired them to write a stupid story them self.
I mean no offense, some stories may indeed be stupid, and your experience with them must not have been the best, but please, don't just term a story "stupid".


OP: You can't really use a shortcut, they almost never work. I recommend you pick a heavy book which doesn't bore you at all, like somebody already recommended, Catch-22/Lord of The Rings, depending on whether you prefer a brilliant fantasy(LOTR) or a brilliant comedy(Catch-22).

...Not talking about short-cuts but about how to get started. Actually, when I haven't read in Spanish (which is happening too o_o) I read a short-story (like Maupassant's Horla...or even something funny) and that puts me in the mood of reading. I'm just the kind of person that gets easily frustrated xd So...I need to have the right attitude and the right mood. Short-stories helps me. Not saying I won't ever read a big novel nor anything...Just advices to get started...

Yeah, but don't judge yourself based on that test, it's absolute rubbish if it only goes up to 45,000 words to begin with. You're pretty good for it not being your native language, then again, most natives to English these days couldn't use it properly if their lives depended on it (glares at teenagers). At least there are some people that want an education. xd

Hahahaha But I really have a poor vocabulary xd I realize when I'm reading a manga and don't even understand what they're sayin' xd Hahaha Just because I don't know some words...and when I'm talking is the same...I keep thinking in the words in Spanish xd Hahaha But that's because I haven't read xd When I write and read lots of things in English I even start to think in English...xd

If you want to do something for your vocab & get the fastest outcome, first you must find or define your interests & the means of it! (Worked for me!) Meaning: You can improve your vocab by any means! :y Even reading some posts here can be useful! xd
Watch your favorite movies or episodes without subtitles & guess the dictation of words unknown for you; Then find their meanings in your dictionary! You’ll learn some practical words & have also enjoyed your time! It’s like killing 2 birds with one stone! (Entertainment & education!)

xd Well...my teacher actually made me watch some movies, but at that time I had very bad listening so it was quite frustrating...I didn't understand 85% of those movies xd Now...it seems like I've actually improved...xd And you're right about killing two birds with a single stone.

read the Odyssey by Homer or Othello by Shakespear

...Imo I find the Odyssey hard to read even in Spanish xd Not the best option to get started.

1) Read a dictionary
2) Read posts in the "Post your favourite quote" and "Game only for the smartest" section.

I didn't realize you'd be into classics, Of Mice and Men & Animal Farm are both great novels, here's a few more quick read classics that I'd rank a little higher:
-Lord of the Files, by William Golding
-The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
-The Chronicles of Narnia (series) by C. S. Lewis

....I've heard a lot about Lord of the Flies :y Sounds awesome...better start reading.

Read Playboy, that's how I broadened my boobs...I mean vocabulary U_U

...If I wanted to entertain my self with boobs, I'd buy just the newspaper. Here the sensationalism is so strong and the violence so hard that besides a murder new there's a nude woman...so men don't think.

I got 20,000+ words. I actually don't read a lot xd but I would suggest listening to the news, reading the paper, magazines etc. These are the things that I usually read, Stuff like that. Also, maybe try watching more english. Movies and dramas, stuff that you like. I think those are the best ways to learn more words
