Just read the manga, much faster. If you have the time: Than definately watch the anime. It's an awesome story.

Yes, it's definitely worth it. I'd recommend that you start with watching the anime and then switching to the manga after the Marineford arc. Take your time and don't visit any OP sections if you don't want to get spoiled
This, ignore everyone that says start from marineford or what not. Just start from the beginning, once you reach post skip just read the manga. Don't worry about catching up watch it at your own pace whether it takes weeks, months, or years. Its not a race. If you don't wanna waste too much time just read the whole thing instead.

I really wanna get into it. A lot of my friends watch it and love it, but man over 600 episodes is a LOT. My question is: Is it worth it to start now or am I just shit out of luck?
Watch it for your own enjoyment. The built up progression is great. ONE PIECE is the only manga\anime worth.

Trust me.

Lame? That's where we establish what Luffy's & Zoro's end goals are. The start is never lame, it's foundation for the series lol.

I'd say it's worth it, people look at shows and things from different perspective, anyhow, it's a great show nonetheless, I suggest watching it from the start if u want to get a good grasp of the story, the story starts off slow, and I do mean really slow and you have to go through the phase cause I've seen countless people whom drop the manga after or during the first 30 episodes, I myself, also wanted to drop it since I never found it intriguing, but later on my brother kept on bugging me telling me "nah man! You've gotta read it! The story really progresses and becomes REALLY epic after the Alabasta arc" and believe me! He was actually pretty correct on the matter, I started watching, and damn! I got hooked, just amazing, after the sabody archipelago arc I just became an OP fanboy! LOL

But really, IMO, it's totally worth it if you have free time on your hands, I'd certainly give it a read or watch, might start out really slow, but trust me, it's picks up pace, and the show overall is really enjoyable

The anime also has really less fillers, unlike naruto and bleach, the fillers rarely pop up between arcs, but even so, they're less, and very less, but they're still there

MF isn't that amazing IMO (still on my top 5 arc list), I just love the opening.

Which one is number 1?

well It's just my opinion but I'd say that the Last arc of Toriko was the best arc of the year followed by the current one piece arc Dressrosa

Both are top tier arcs IMO though.
